The news of @roncarrollbmc's sudden passing was the first thing I read this morning, and all day I've been thinking about the many times our paths crossed and the countless contributions he made to #HouseMusic. Thank you Ron. Sending love to his family, friends and fans worldwide.
🖼✍️🏾 reposted from @5.magazine We are mourning today for one of the shooting stars of Chicago house music, whose legacy is a stack of records as high as your neck but also the uncounted but vast numbers of DJs, vocalists and producers he put on stage and advocated for.
#RonCarroll was a vocalist, producer, DJ and impresario — and you could keep talking, keep listing his titles for awhile before you ran out of jobs. He excelled at all of them.
As a vocalist he appeared on tracks with Hardsoul and Bob Sinclar and dozens more; he wrote lyrics for the Barbara Tucker smash “I Get Lifted” (one of the most identifiable house music tracks in history); he performed with countless artists, broke even more, and his production skills matched those of just about anybody.
Having experienced what it’s like to work as a vocalist in the business, he was a tireless advocate for singers in #housemusic demanding they receive equal billing with the producers they worked with.
Ron had to be counted as one of the hardest working DJs you ever met, both in terms of the city of Chicago and of his generation. Ron maintained an international profile but also played a remarkable number of local gigs, many in front of crowds representing a new generation. When he didn’t get enough bookings, he threw the party himself.
Back when we started 5 Mag, it was common to hear local artists lament that Chicago’s leading lights weren’t as close as the high profile house music artists of other cities, or as close as they’d once been. They didn’t work together as much as they once did, scarred by the vicious legacy of some of Chicago’s early house music labels and the zero-sum mentality that dominated partnerships and then broke them.
I think Ron was one of the artists that tried to change that, that tried to get people WORKING TOGETHER again...(Read more at @5.magazine 's IG)

Afro*Disco 3: A Dancer's Paradise
AFRO*DISCO 3: A DANCERS PARADISE!
It was my first time attending the event known as Afro Disco but it will not be my last. In fact, I’ll never miss another one again. It was everything people said it was and more. AFRO*DISCO is one of those rare moments that have all the elements of a fantastic party. Walking inside Estate on Elston, I immediately knew I was in for a treat. Beautifully decorated by hosts, Louis Lazu and Jose Amaro, I immediately smiled at the care that went into the festive décor. As they say, “Love is in the Details” and Louis and Jose made sure every patron in attendance felt the love. I felt welcomed from the moment I arrived.
The Room was filled with dancing bodies, smiling faces, laughter and incredible music. The vibe was so refreshing. I arrived alone but I was immediately amongst friends. Whether grooving on the dancefloor, enjoying a cocktail at the bar or enjoying the beautiful breeze from the riverfront patio, I felt nothing but positivity from the packed club. DJs, Steve Maxwell, Duane Powell and birthday boys, DJs Vick Lavender and Ron Carroll blessed the tables and gave the audience nothing but their very best. Each set was played with intention, catering to the dancers and they seamlessly transitioned from one set to another. We couldn’t get enough. Shouts and screams of agreement echoed throughout the crowd all night long. I even overheard one dancer in the crowd say,
“I want to stop and rest but the music is so damn good!”
She didn’t lie. It was truly a non-stop celebration. When you thought it couldn’t get any better, we were treated to a special live performance by dance legend, Robin S, who sang her chart topping hit, “Show Me Love” along with a special birthday song for Ron Carroll and Vick Lavender. Afro*Disco 3 was a dancers paradise. Held in a space big enough to move, nonstop music by outstanding sound selectors that kept the groove going all night long and hosts who cared enough about the patrons experience to cover the room in festive details and a crowd dripping in positivity, it was perfect combination for an outstanding night.
Afro*Disco is definitely one of the premier events in Chicago and I cannot wait to experience the next one!
