I have to jump in to agree that the most cunning we see in HP is from characters that are Gryffindor - Harry, Sirius, Dumbledore, and Pettigrew (but I don’t like that rat so I won’t talk about him). There’s a few notable exceptions of course, but I find that hilarious

I also completely agree with you, I think the reason that Harry and Sirius both didn’t end up in Slytherin is that they chose not to. They both met their platonic soulmate on the train, who confessed to having a history of family being put in Gryffindor (James was probably more enthusiastic about this than Ron), wanted to be far far away from any influences of their awful home life... so they were both going Not Slytherin.

The sorting hat also probably took a 11 year old arguing with it as a sign that they were indeed better suited for Gryffindor
