Ron knocked on the door to the safe house. He held a small cardboard box. A large fruit-basket sat next to him. The door swung open. Lee ran a hand through his hair,"Come in."
Ron handed him the cardboard box. "Saved you a piece of cake."
Lee opened the box. "Lee" was written in gold icing."Thanks.Sorry I missed it. Was putting my name, too, your mum's idea?"
"She made a separate one."Ron picked the fruit basket up and set it on the coffee table. "She was gonna surprise you, but you know how fast her cake goes."
"But it was your day."Lee summoned a fork and sat on the couch.
"And your's was the day before."
"And it was a good one,"said Lee lightly.
"Right..."said Ron.He stayed standing."So good you didn't come to my party?"
Lee avoided Ron's gaze and cut into the slice of cake.He attempted to laugh it off."I don't see why you're fussing.I sent your present."
Ron folded his arms."With a note saying you weren't coming."
Lee sighed and put the fork down."Just say it."
"Are you okay?"
" I'm fine now."
Ron sat next to him."What happened?Kassie said you liked the tail. We were all looking forward to seeing it."
Lee flumped back on the couch."It wasn't the tail."Lee studied his hands."I was feeling alright. Brilliant, actually. I thought if there was any time to try it would be then.I went out."
"You go out all the time."
"I go out disguised as Ben."Lee pulled his glasses off and turned them over in his hands. "Not me."
"Oh."
" 'Oh.' Yeah."
"But you're suppose to be in hiding."
"I blew that up when I told the Order and my family I was alive. It's a flimsy secret at best."Lee waved his glasses. "These turned off my disguise when I was on my way out of work a few months back. One of your classmates saw.."
"Which classmate?"
"I don't know. That's not the point,"Lee pulled the cake towards him again. "I thought...I thought this time I could do it.
"So it went badly?"
"The same, but I expected..."
"More.You hoped."
" It wasn't enough."
"You need to give yourself ti--"
"I know. Godric, I know!" Lee stood up."But I wanted something tangible."He gripped the glasses in one hand. "Something I could point to--Not dead? Not an achievement. Don't hallucinate Not-Bellatrix as much?"He scoffed and shrugged. "I'm the only one who sees her anyway. And it's not like I advertise that fact. It proves nothing."
"You don't have to prove anything to anyone, mate,"said Ron "You should've owled someone."
"I didn't need anyone."
"Don't say that."
"See. That. That tone would've just made it worse.Lee Jordan. No illusions. No hand holding. No disguise glasses for one second without wanting to run.I wouldn't even have told anyone. It would've been for me and I would've gone to your party. We would've celebrated you. And I would've had something of my own to celebrate. But I didn't. And I didn't want to ruin your day, okay?I'd already ruined mine."
"You should've come anyway,"said Ron. He twisted around, knees on the cushions, to talk to Lee over the back of the couch."You do need people. You're better with people. That's what you've been saying."
Lee sighed again."When I said...'I didn't need anyone.' " He walked back around and sat next to Ron. "I didn't mean that I'm trying to do it alone. I meant...I know when I'm just having a bad day and I can deal with it.You lot need to trust me, too."
"We do,"said Ron. "Just with Dina traveling and all..."
"Dina traveling is proof she believes in me. I had to convince her it was a good idea,"said Lee. He smiled. "Besides, I wasn't alone. Whose idea was it to send someone every hour until midnight?"
Ron groaned,"I told Mum that was a horrible idea.I thought I squashed it."
"She's very persuasive.I'm surprised you didn't notice people disappearing from your party and coming back.I stopped answering the door after the fifth person. Stuck a sign up.'I'm fine. Kick the birthday boy.' "
"I'm glad they didn't follow your instructions."
"I guess they're scared 'cause you're a proper Auror now."
"I've been an Auror for a couple of years now,"said Ron straightening his jacket. "Thank you very much."
"Eh, I was pretending to be dead for at least one of them.I still have to catch up."
"Shut up." Ron tossed a couch pillow at his head. "So..."He turned his head."Do you still have the tail?"
"Ohhh so that's why you came to visit..." Lee stood up and shrugged off his bathrobe leaving him in his sweatpants.Kassie's spell-work tail was still attached. "I couldn't aim at the right angle to get rid of it.Then, I forgot about it."
Ron snickered."You forgot about having a tail?"
"I know a guy with horns. He forgets sometimes and they're on his head,"Lee opened the wrapping on the fruit basket. "I'll take it your other reason for being here is free smoothies?"
"I had to buy that fruit,"said Ron.
Lee picked up the basket and brought it to the counter. "What kind?"
"Mango?"said Ron.
"Mango, it is,"said Lee. "Two smoothies coming up.And don't eat my cake."
"It came here intact. Don't you trust me?"
Lee summoned the cake. "Not with food."
"I could get rid of the tail for you."
"I trust a Weasley with a clear shot at my arse even less.Stop staring or I'll have to tell Dina."
Hermione had not seen Ron since the two split
so she was a bit nervous to see him. The brunette
sat at the coffeeshop table, brown hues darted
around the room. Her gaze landed onto a familiar
redhead, lips curved into a wide smile.
