day 2 bird of the day 🦜
one of my favourite birds today, the european robin (roodborstje in dutch which adds to the cuteness)!!
robins are small insectivorous birds with lots of subspecies all over the world. it's a beloved and easy recognisable bird for most people and even has the nickname a 'gardeners friend' because it shows lots of interest in the activity (all the worms being dug up!!). it is generally unafraid and likes being close to humans and other animals 😌.
because of its red chest the bird has been linked to lots of stories, religion and folklore. the most popular one is christmas, the red on its chest depicts the blood of christ. that's why the bird is so heavily linked to the holiday and can be found on the cards and decorations 🎄.
most languages have named the bird after their signature red chest, and the name robin actually also stems from the same naming scheme. the bird became known as robin redbreast in the 15th century when it was a popular trend to give human names to familiar species (robin originated from robert). after a while the name became shortened to just robin!
