Roommating Book Review

I picked up this book for a couple of reasons. This was a free book in my online book group so I scooped it up. But the main thing that got my attention was the fact that it was roommates. I love the “OMG they were roommates” trope and I liked the idea of these people not wanting to be roommates let alone anything more. I went in thinking that this would be enemies to lovers romance with the roommate trope and it didn’t hit those marks the way I wanted.
I knew of course that this was going to be like all of the adult romances circulating with more sex scenes than necessary, but I had expected more from this novella (196 pages) than I should have. I felt like all of the characters were flat. Even our main couple. The dog drove me nuts by the end, but I know that everyone loves their pets an obscene amount. And I didn’t like the progression of this relationship. They’re supposed to be enemies. She’s supposed to be harboring this huge grudge. But it feels like they spend five minutes together and all of this past hurt is just water under the bridge. And it felt like they were way to willing to open themselves up to this relationship. I want a real slow burn enemies to lovers where they don’t even realize they’re falling in love. I want them suddenly acknowledging their feelings and freaking the fuck out about it. And this wasn’t that at all. Part of that is just the length of the novel, but part of that is just the pacing that the authors put into it. Nothing progressed the way it felt like it should have.
I did enjoy the setting a lot and it was definitely a quick and easy read. I would be surprised if it had taken me longer than two to two and a half hours to read. If you’re looking for a quick contemporary to break up all the fantasy (or whatever your favorite genre is), this could be just what you need.
