“Sam, you’re tired.”

Sam barely looked up from the page his was reading. He could hear Cas’ voice, but he wasn’t quite sure what he was saying. The familiar grumble comforted him enough, and Sam just hummed in agreement to whatever was said. He was almost at the end of his chapter, he could speak to Cas then.

His boyfriend seemed to have other ideas, pushing the book to the centre of the table and sitting in it’s place. There was a frown on his face, and while Sam thought it was adorable he knew that frown meant Cas was upset. The angel leant down and pressed a kiss on Sam’s forehead.

“You’re overworking yourself,” he muttered into Sam’s skin, his words half lost. Sam had to agree with him. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept and his stomach growled in hunger. Another kiss on his nose.

“I need to fix this, Cas,” he replied. Always had to fix everything. If he didn’t, no one else would. He reached out for his book again but Cas stopped him. “I’m almost at the end of the chapter!”

“Okay but after that you go to sleep,” Cas scolded him. Sam reluctantly agreed. Anything to mean he could get back to reading his book. Cas left him to research away.

As he reached the end of the chapter, the last few words hanging in his mind, Cas reappeared by his side. He had a plate in one hand and a blanket in the other, offering them both out to Sam. There was a peanut butter and banana sandwich on his plate, and Sam felt his stomach howl. He gratefully took the plate, wolfing down the sandwich in a matter of seconds. Maybe he was hungrier than he knew. At least he didn’t feel so empty.

The blanket was wrapped around his shoulders, Cas’ graceful fingers holding it there.

“Are you ready to come to bed?” He asked. Truthfully, Sam wanted to read until the end of the book. It had another couple of chapters left and he was sure at least one of them could help him. On the other hand, his eyes were drooping and it was making it hard to read the handwritten text. Sam blinked up at Cas. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

The blanket still hanging from him, Cas helped him walk to their room. A few months ago, it had been bare but Cas had insisted with filling it with little trinkets. Framed photos of the two together, little mementos from their dates. It was homely. 

Cas tucked Sam into bed, kissing him quick before climbing in the other side. Instinctively, Sam buried himself in his boyfriend, curling up to fit at Cas’ side. In return, Cas wrapped an arm around him.

“Get some rest, Sam, the world will still be here tomorrow.”
