thinking about how sam's english teacher told him his creative writing was promising and like not to project but sam as a writer. sam publishing pulp novels under a psuedonym in college as a way to get extra money, writing stories about supernatural creatures and yellow eyed monsters he sees in his dreams. he gets 9 cent every time one of his books is borrowed from a library. when he jess first invites him home for the holidays, he feels he has to tell her, and she laughs but reads his stuff and it's good if a little gory. so she tells him about john grisham who is a lawyer and an author, and maybe sam should look into it.

and maybe he would have done. maybe he was halfway through his first proper novel when dean turns up on his doorstep. and he never brings it up, even after their first week on the road when sam runs out of clothes and they have to stop off at a thrift store, one that happens to have a copy of his second novel about a werewolf hunt. not when he starts doing research and finding his own stories as part of the lore. and when the truck crashes into them and his laptop snaps in half, the story he started wroting is gone forever.
