#rooster teeth problems

An FYI for fans who may not be aware:

Rooster Teeth is owned by Fullscreen, which is owned by Otter Media, which is owned by multinational conglomerate AT&T. (Source, source.)

While RT is itself a relatively small group, they’re not an indie company and they haven’t been for some time, and talking about them as though they were a small struggling independent studio is really not accurate and only serves to muddy whatever issue you’re discussing. 

There are (for example) plenty of good arguments against piracy that don’t involve misrepresenting what kind of company RT actually is at this point in time, and in the effort to discourage piracy, misinformation only weakens our arguments.

There was basically no hype train for RWBY4 after the brief glimpse at RTX either. I kept waiting for it and it just…never happened.

I can’t help wondering if it’s because RT is just cranking out new content constantly these days and are really only focusing on promotion for the newer properties while resting on the established fanbase for the older shows.

I get that to a degree, especially with RvB, I mean, this fandom’s really good at seizing on any new piece of information and disseminating it among ourselves (though that only works for the fans who are active in fandom or on social media but those are the fans web-based media caters to, realistically). I just hope it doesn’t reflect the company losing interest in and passion for the show itself. Joe, at least, seems really excited about his season and that’s heartening. I’ve been saying for a while that if RT stops giving a fuck about Red vs. Blue, I would so much rather them close the book on it and let us celebrate the great seasons we’ve had in peace, rather than boredly half-ass and run it into the ground for another five years.

You know, I realized this morning why the general attitude I encounter toward Kathleen Zuelch bugs me, and it’s silly that it took me this long to put my finger on it, but. It’s not because I think Kathleen did nothing wrong--she definitely said some shitty things, you won’t hear me denying that. But there are plenty of RT staff who have said, and done, that bad and worse, yet most fans don’t feel the need to enumerate the sins of, say, Geoff and Gavin, every time they come up in conversation. Most fans don’t have to work to separate their love of Grif from who his VA is as a person. 

Connect the Hots was forgotten within months, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, well--that’s my point. There was an outcry at the time, but most fans now don’t remember it, and these days people are surprised to hear I don’t like Geoff and Gavin. 

Anyone can make mistakes, and people can change; I believe that. But if Geoff and Gavin stalking women in their car and treating it like a game can be forgiven (something which, by the way, prompted no more than a half-assed “sorry you were offended” apology from Geoff and no indication they would actually stop doing it), why are Kathleen’s missteps unforgivable? We aren’t any of us immune to the unconscious double standard.

I imagine he’ll still be writing for Camp Camp as well but I don’t know for sure.

They’ve pushed back the time to 3 PM CT due to technical issues.

Also, they’ve been jokingly-not-jokingly begging people to watch for updates on twitter instead of constantly refreshing the site and continuing to overload the servers. :P

Does this happen with new seasons of RvB too? Granted, I do follow more RWBY people, but I don't think I've ever seen complaints about it for RvB

Oh yeah, it’s definitely happened for RvB, though maybe not quite as badly. I definitely have memories of the site breaking when they tried to drop a season premiere. I mean, not this season, but.

Hey Anne, I was wondering if you know a better way of communicating with the RT staff than commenting on videos? After Crunch Time I really want to let them know how much of a better direction Day 5 was for them, but I'm not sure how to get the point across?

I’ve been contemplating that myself.

I may not be the best person to answer that, in all honesty, because historically I’ve been pretty hands-off as far as feedback to RT--I talk about stuff here on my blog, and I’m not shy with my opinions, but I rarely communicate directly to the staff. The recent response to Miles on the question of LGBT characters in RWBy, which I tweeted to him to make sure he would see, is actually the first piece of critical feedback I’ve written directly to anyone at Rooster Teeth.

So I must admit that it’s not exactly my area of expertise, but I think that with all the new content they’re pushing out in recent months, the impulse to give more feedback is a good one, and one I share.
