Birthday drabble for Kabuto
The repeated knocks on the steel door alarms Kabuto and his roommate from their beds that they need to get up for their daily training. He wasn’t really in the mood to get up as he wanted to sleep some more, but ever since the first day when he stepped into the Root headquarters and his shared room, he had not once defied or ignored an order from the adults and his superiors. Its not like he should as he did volunteer himself in the first place, and he should act like he wants to be a part of it.
Being the more slower than his roommate, he tries to hurry up and put on his clothes after brushing his teeth, before he could say something to his roommate, the older boy hurries out from the room as they’re already well dressed and prepared for the day. More faster than Kabuto as they were in Root years longer than he did. Kabuto might want to ask how do they get ready so fast so that he too can learn how to prepare so quickly. But now wasn’t the time for asking as talking wasn’t allowed in the halls unless it’s a question about something. And even that is limited as he had to learn everything on his own and remember so much as well.
It’s already been half a year, Kabuto has made great progress on his own that even his teachers are impressed, especially by his age too. But unfortunately, despite his skills and impressive intelligence. He’s not allowed to have any friends or socialize unlike the other kids who were allowed to, since he was a “special case” as he was already assigned to spy for Root in another country and it’s only a matter of time till he’ll be sent out, perhaps sooner than he thinks. While it’s convenient that he won’t have to go through the trouble for the rumored “final test” that many Root children go through to become full Root members, it did however leave him out of a lot of things like the identities of his fellow classmates and their own information on their talents and knowledge of topics that he wouldn’t understand that weren’t medical information.
He often was alone as the other kids were instructed to not befriend him in the first place either and he had no idea why they were avoiding him.
“Kabuto.” A monotone voice stops him from heading into his classroom. Kabuto turns around and he looks up at the ominous masked man before him.
“It’s time.” Kabuto’s posture tenses as his focus is still on the man’s words. Almost frozen from shock by those words as he knew full well what they meant.
It’s time to go already?! But he still had so much to learn! Where else can he learn the more difficult medical classes?! Was he even ready at his age?! Why today?! Today is...
The man carries on as he was quick to notice the subtle change in Kabuto’s posture, but he didn’t care. This one was a “temporary” and its not like he was any of importance no matter if he’s prepared or not.
“Pack only the essentials and light items only, but be quick. You will start heading out immediately and the items and your assigned identity required for the mission will be provided for you when you get to the destination. I’ll be the one to escort you on the way so head towards the entrance so that we can leave. It’s better that we leave while it’s still morning.” At that, he quietly leaves the child for him to absorb the news and prepare to leave while the other kids eye Kabuto for a moment till the classroom door closes on them.
His stomach flip flopped as his hands grip onto the books tightly till the tips of his fingers turn to a pale pink color. His heart raced anxiously as he takes the first few steps away from the door and to the direction of his room. He takes a deep breath as he starts to move faster, not really realizing that he was actually holding his breath since the man spoke to him.
Half a year, only half a year here and he’s already being sent out on a possibly dangerous mission that he was emotionally unprepared for, yes he had the knowledge and the skills for it. But in his mind, he felt like an academy student being sent out on a S rank mission. A guaranteed death if he fails the mission, and because he was isolated by the others, almost no one has any connection or some sort of memory of him.
Everyone except his Mother and the children back at home.
He makes it to his room and he could see the new empty backpack that has already been provided to him as well as his own robe and new clothes and shoes with the note on it that says, “Put these on and leave the clothes that you’re wearing on the bed. You won’t need them anymore.” It lacked the brand names that most packs had and it lacked the enough space inside to fit anything else besides spare clothes, shoes, socks, toothbrushes, food pills, scrolls and spare weapons. Though it at least had secure pockets for him to put his spare glasses in without the worry of them getting damaged. As for his clothes, they were the standard traveling clothes For a moment, he kind of wished that he could’ve snagged one of Urushi’s buttons on that hat of his to remember him by since it’s small enough to carry and probably be able to smuggle it in unnoticed.
His roommate quietly returned to the room to pick something up that he left behind and he notices that Kabuto was already getting dressed, the usual uniform for the recruits to wear are folded neatly onto the bed. Kabuto doesn’t acknowledge him when they went into the room, since he assumed that they were going to ignore him as usual. It’s not like they had a proper conversation to begin with so perhaps it was better this way for the two of them. Despite the few months of staying together, they were still strangers. Kabuto doesn’t even know the kid’s name and he assumed that they didn’t know his as well.
The only memory of him will be these clothes, and even they will be given to another kid his age or size. It unsettled him greatly due to the implications on how replaceable he could be if he fails the mission.
The other boy knew exactly what it meant when he sees the clothes that Kabuto had worn, and he knows that it means that he will never come back to Root. He’s officially a Root shinobi now and being younger than him was quite shocking to them as well. He knew that they weren’t supposed to interact or befriend Kabuto as he was ordered to do so by the adults, but he had been paying attention and observed Kabuto throughout their stay together. He knew more about Kabuto than any of the adults did, what the boy would say in his sleep, when he would cry at night due to the sheer loneliness of the place, and how emotionally distant everyone was ordered to treat him and he wondered why.
He would’ve wanted to be his friend if he was able to, but it seems like that day will never come now that Kabuto has “graduated”. He picks up the bandages and a small wrapped present that he forgot from his pack and he stands up before looking back at Kabuto again.
“Here. It will help you keep track of time for your missions since you tend to forget the time and the timer will help too. Good luck out there... Kabuto.” He said quietly as he offers the present to Kabuto and he places the gift on the bed next to their clothes. He was meant to sneak it onto his bed one of these days as a surprise gift for their efforts but it seems like it could only serve as a farewell gift to them. It’s the least he could do as an apology for seemingly appearing so aloof to them when he had been looking out for him this whole time.
Kabuto’s dark innocent eyes turn to them and he blinks as they give them the small gift before deciding to leave the room without a word of goodbye. He takes the present into his hand and he turns his back to the door, so that anyone in the hall won’t see the small clothed present in his hands.
Pulling the small dull dirtied string, he stares at the silver case of the pocket watch that looked quite new and it’s reflective color contrasted the dull colored cloth. Did the kid somehow knew that today was his birthday? Kabuto wondered exactly why would they give someone like him a gift like this if they didn’t seem to want to be his friend? Was he too blind to see what they were really feeling about him? He wished that they could stick around for Kabuto to say “thank you” to but perhaps this kind of parting was for the best of both of them since they will never see each other again. But it doesn’t stop the tears from wanting to build up in his eyes.
He puts the watch into his pocket securely and he looks back at the room and at his roommate’s bed one last time before he heads out.
Guess he will be remembered by someone here after all..
