“I mean...” Rory moved closer to his face, taking her face in his hands, cupping both sides of her face and stroked his thumbs along the sides of her temples. He knew how stressful and traumatic the subject was. But the entire last few years had been traumatic and stressful as well. Even if they knew the outcome. And being that they were helpless to stop millions of people getting killed with future knowledge. The War was a stressful time all around. And now it was over.
“I mean let’s find a baby.” Rory was a little overwhelmed, a little bit humming with the possibilities. A little tripping over his own words. He frowned, almost laughing, “Well, not just any baby-- like looking on-- Nevermind. I mean adopt. Let’s adopt. I was chatting with the social services worker today and she said we would be perfect candidates. We have steady, dependable income, she knows me, you work from home, we’ve been married for the preferred amount of time. We’d only have a few interviews, a few home visits. Maybe not even that. They’re desperate to place children in homes. And aren’t we desperate to try again?”
Rory didn’t mean to sound like he was trying to convince her. Although he was. He knew Amy had her fears about adoption. The same sudden and forced separation that had stolen River away from them for years. He moved to hold her hands.
“Things are different now... This is the life we wanted all along.”
