ok so remember the episode where emily convinces rory to sit for her portrait to be painted?? so remember emily wanted there to be swans in the painting?? but rory (with lorelai's help/insistence) is able to be painted in a more comfortable position with no swans and just simply reading a book

now the episode swan song directly references this painting when jess sees it in richard's study at friday night dinner... the same dinner that her famously showed up to with a black eye from a swan of all things!!

swans = rory's aristocratic side. beautiful, graceful, but famously territorial

jess getting beaked by a swan of all things right before interacting with the blue blood side of rory for the first time can't be a coincidence

but by the end of the episode, he mentions going back to her grandparent's house even though the night was not a good one

he's willing to face the swans for her

but now let's go back to the painting. under emily's influence, rory was willing to have the swans involved in order to appease emily and richard. however, when lorelai finds out what's going on, she's able to get the swans out of the picture and rory can pose with a book (who else happens to be symbolized by books?? hmm)

then in s6 we see rory without lorelai influencing her life and she falls fully into the swan life and we see by the end of it that she doesn't like that life, she loves emily and understands the swan life, but (with jess's influence) shakes that part of her life off and gets back on track

she's not completely swan-less, though she doesn't intentionally make them a centerpiece in her life. but it's okay when they do appear because jess has always been willing to risk the swans to be with her

rory in 6x08 being sad and miserable but barely jess arrives she is happier than in the last two seasons vs rory after being at her low point taking jess's advice, having a goal in life again and being happy for that and that's on soulmatism

Look at the hair! The fixed facial hair! The shoulders! The biceps!

Look, i know he was being a shit lord here, but Luke’s clothes really suit him.

WOOOOOOO! I don’t normally like his facial hair (the beginning of the show at least), but he is looking fantastic. And this is his first of many cool jackets.

Boi. This part gets me every single time. The green looks good on him (& is the same color as Luke’s, maybe b/c he’s symbolically starting to fit in?) AND the way his arms look??

Another fantastic jacket! And his hair! And his face! Not to mention his hair!

The tight camo thermal is just a gift, ain’t it?

Jacket #1 makes a reappearance and this time his hair is longer! I like when his hair is a little longer.

Jacket #2 returns! And this time, he’s wearing a bright green shirt under it (again, looks great in green).

This outfit with and without the jacket is what I picture Jess in, I think. He wears this same shirt in 2.10 (”The Bracebridge Dinner”), but his hair is definitely better here. (Look at the smile!)

I’m sorry, but how could Rory even think of letting him leave looking like that? What? 

I think my appreciation for this weirdly sporty-feeling look is partially because of the fact that this is the first time that he is thoroughly thrown off his game.... 

I think both Statler and Waldorf look good in this picture, really. And are they color coordinated to show that they are getting along? Maybe.

This is one of the only times you see him wearing solid black and let me just say- thank you.

Again, the arms The shoulders. The way that he looks in general. 

Again, wearing black. Eery time, it’s a GODDAMN. The arms, the hair, the tan.... 

Dry Jess? A 10/10. Wet Jess? Sorry, what was a number again?

this is my favorite scene and he is looking choice.

The jean jacket is a good choice, my boy. 

The color black is a gift.

For whatever reason, this shirt makes me think he looks like a car guy.

Strong at Broken Places

Thunder rolled in the distance. The clouds opened up. Rain drizzled down. To wait it out, Jess ducked into a small shop - a hole in the wall - and looked around. It was cluttered with records, t-shirts, vhs tapes, old calendars, trinkets, junk in general. He hated going into a place and not buying anything, but he had two bucks to his name. There was also a stand of postcards; that would do. He picked one that had a reproduction of an album cover from The Bangles printed on it.  Sliding a dollar over, he got 50 cents in return.

He scrolled using a borrowed pen from the counter. He also added Rory’s address. Dropping the prepaid postcard in the mail, Jess wondered what would happen next. He spent much of the summer wondering as he barely made by. Hearing nothing, he almost gave up hope at ever seeing or hearing from her again.

Jess found himself sitting on a park bench outside one of the subway terminals.  He looked - rough to say the least. There were bags under his eyes. He’d lost weight so his clothes hung off his shoulders. Sleep and food had been scarce lately. Jobs had been, too. He felt lost and scared and alone. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Jess whispered to himself as he watched the August shadows fade as dusk fell.

now that I’ve watched all of Gilmore Girls and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life

If I had to pick between Jess or Logan for Rory I would pick Jess. Jess didn’t have a lot going for him in the original show, but he grew up, he helped Rory figure out where she was going, and when he looked in the window before he left you realized he still really, really, loved her.

While Logan on the other hand is still a rich daddy’s boy who went back to his player ways and was cheating with Rory. If he wasn’t going to leave Odette for Rory, then he is no good for her.
