It’s often been questioned whether Jess would have the loyalty of such a large portion of the fan base if he’d been played by another actor. In my opinion, no. He wouldn’t have. Not because, “omg he’s so hawtt!!” Because Milo brought something to the character of Jess that no other actor could. The body language and facial expressions of Jess Mariano are what show the character. They tell his backstory more than any words spoken in the series.

In the above scene, Jess had just been accosted on the street and threatened. On the streets of Stars Hollow. I wonder if such a thing had ever happened before in that town. And you watch Jess’ body language afterward…and you can see it. You can see that this is the kind of thing that dogs him wherever he goes. Whether the parallel experience in his past was from abusive partners of his mother’s, inner city school bullies who target kids who are small for their age…intelligent for their age…perpetually “the new kid,” or just the perils of walking New York City streets in the low rent districts… or all three, Jess has lived through this before…has bitten his tongue, and bottled it up, and toughed it out. Here goes life on repeat.

To what degree (if any!) do you agree with this unpopular opinion? Gilmore Girls was so maddeningly inconsistent, unrealistic and sloppy in its depiction of socioeconomic class differences that I wish they hadn't even tried!

My take that no one asked for: I feel like Gilmore Girls' depiction of socioeconomic class differences was unrealistically, annoyingly over the top in some ways yet weirdly minimized in others?! Do not even get me started on Logan supposedly having to marry someone due to some vague "dynastic plan" lol, or the fact that working class Luke has a spare 40-50K laying around that he can access immediately to loan to friends with no expectation of repayment or...I could keep going but will spare you :)

well last night i got to merry fisticuffs on my rewatch and now all i can think is

richard is emily's christopher

obviously this would be an easier comparison if we had even one iota of information about emily's background, but her speech to lorelai at the end of the episode says it all to me

she says that marriage is often about "not being happy at all" which we see throughout the show.

we do see emily that emily is sometimes happy in her marriage, but oftentimes she's not because richard places himself above her. we know that he looks down on her and her hobbies/place in the home. we see how his comments hurt emily

and even after their separation and vow renewal, we still see a lot of unhappiness in their relationship

this isn't me saying that i don't think emily loves richard because i do think that she does, but i really think she likely sacrificed more than we realize to get where she is in life and that's why she thinks lorelai should be able to just make it work with christopher despite his shortcomings, because she made it work with richard

i'm sure other people have talked about this before, but this was the first time it felt like it fully slapped me in the face

Rory & Jess Parallels - First & Last Kiss (2.22 // 6.18)

It’s interesting to line up these two scenes just to look at the similarities and differences. I think it’s interesting to notice that during their first kiss, Rory is the one that instigates it and during their last kiss it’s switched, and Jess is the one that leans forward. Rory also pulls away both times, realizing that she’s with someone else. Another noteworthy point is that their positions are switched - in the first one Rory’s on the left, and in the last one she’s on the right. It seems a very fitting way to “close” their chapter, so to speak.

I think another major difference is the scenery, the clothing and the colors in general. Their first kiss happens outdoors amid a bounty of green as they’re both wearing shades of blue. It’s optimistic and speaks of new life, new love, and hope for the future. Their last kiss happens in a very neutral-colored space, while they’re dressed in grays and blacks. There’s something restrictive about the fact that it’s indoors as well…and while I can think of no more fitting a place for a kiss from these two than a publishing house, the atmosphere is more muddled and stale. 

To expand on that a little bit, their first kiss happens in a bit of a wooded area, with green trees surrounding them. Their last kiss happens in a place that has a lot of wooden furniture. Perhaps this is another way of contrasting the two scenes. The live wood vs. the dead wood.

If you watch these two scenes fully and in succession you’ll realize how similar they’re set up as well. Rory turning to see Jess from afar reversed so that Jess notices Rory from afar…the short conversation, the impromptu kiss, the pulling away, the confused look on Jess’ face, the horrified look on Rory’s, the last glance back…

That post I just shared about how Jess is good at accepting when he's wrong and listening to Rory's point of view when they have a conflict is making me think about one of the things that frustrates me about Rory's relationship with Logan. Because Logan doesn't do that in general. Rory always approaches their arguments the way Jess did: like they're both genuinely attempting to understand each other and find some middle ground, but that's not how Logan is operating. Logan is approaching the argument like it's a business negotiation or he's a lawyer. So, he keeps pushing for more, possibly (if I give him the benefit of the doubt) expecting her to push back just as hard, while Rory keeps conceding and compromising. And conceding and compromising would be great if they were BOTH doing it! But they're not. Logan is haggling and Rory just ends up ceding more and more ground until he's rolled right over her, and I really hate that that keeps happening over and over again.

Ooh, I was just reminded I'd wanted to react to this. I totally agree on most of it. Back on my old blog, I got a question in my inbox about Rory's characterization and how it can be hard to capture in fic. And I made the point that, in my observation, Rory tends to either match the energy of the person she's with (i.e. Paris or her mom) or else capitulate to keep the peace (i.e. Logan, Dean). Most characters in the show are more dominant personalities than Rory, and she's not interested in being the most commanding presence in a room. But then again, neither is Jess, and his reactionary personality (observe, then respond) gives her the breathing room to be more assertive.

But! I have no benefit of the doubt and when I first read this post, I wondered if it was another commentary on class. Logan is very used to being the most commanding presence in a room because his background has told him he should be; he's used to getting his way and using either his money or his family's influence to do it. Christopher has a similar, if more muted, approach to his life. The difference is Lorelai also grew up in that world and calls him on his shit. But Christopher similarly spends most of his time avoiding his responsibilities and not being willing to be accountable--this is why Lorelai rejects his proposal in season 1 and why this epiphany is a part of his character development in season 7. Jess, on the other hand, has spent most of his life living with a mother that doesn't really give a damn about what he thinks or what he wants, and his interactions with the world at large haven't really dissuaded him from the notion that his thoughts and feelings don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. It definitely informs how he interacts with the world.

But moreover, I definitely think that Logan's doing it on purpose. He might have started because he's just used to others haggling with him, but if were accidental, we'd gradually start to see him realize that Rory doesn't do that and Rory is not a fan of this dynamic and change. Or he'd be responding more directly to the points she is bringing up and there would an understanding reached. Instead, he's just browbeating her into accepting his side of the situation, regardless of her feelings. It's part of why I can't stand his character. I just want to smack him every time he does that overconfident smirk when he's convinced Rory of something she was initially against.
