Insult to Injury The Director's Cut... Chapter IX (WIP PREVIEW)

Safin held the gun steady. In the light of the lamp he appeared paler than usual. Klebb lingered in the doorway. He was alone in the room. “Your condition has improved.”

“Well enough,” he said hoarsely. “Was it your doing? Or Swann’s?”

Klebb’s mouth curled. He was bothered in a way he could not articulate past suspicion. Swann had burrowed deeply into his bones and rotted him from inside. She had her uses, even if she would not appreciate them while she lived. Klebb had given Swann a chance at revenge that even Blofeld could not. “Do you believe Swann would do this to spite you?”

A beat. Safin looked right through her. He could sense the bait and would not rise to it. “Would you take that chance in my position?”

“The incident in Rome was premeditated. It wasn't about getting rid of Mr. Konig, though his tenure was overdue. Nor was the goal to cause any lasting harm to you or to our company assets.” Klebb paused. "The goal is, and always has been, to eradicate SPECTRE's threats, the primary example of which being 007. Blofeld’s fixation has cost us much. Whether or not he is aware of this as a flaw is irrelevant. I am willing to do what is necessary for the syndicate, even if it means going against its leader indirectly.

"You’ve a right to be angry. To distrust me. But I will tell you that it was Ernst Blofeld and his colleagues that brought you into this life under my discretion. They took everything from you as a child, as they did Dr. Swann. They view you as only a proxy for their greater ambitions.”

Safin held her eyes. "The Poison Garden still operates. It fell back into Blofeld's hands shortly after Le Chiffre was killed. In that time since, Blofeld has been too busy with other pursuits. He’s overlooked the real danger, which is not 007. SPECTRE has been harboring a mole.”

“Arrogance does not befit you.”

“You’ve overlooked this,” Safin continued, “because it suits you to keep Blofeld on this endless chase after 007. But he’ll figure out eventually. Perhaps he already has.”

A muscle in her jaw jumped but she mastered herself. There was no way Safin could have been made aware of the deal between Mansfield and Largo, nor the transfer of funds to Denbigh. Safin was a man running on borrowed time, convinced that he was about to die and driven as any cornered animal to the point of desperation. Without the Poison Garden, there was no justification in his existence here.

"We understand each other," Safin continued. "There's no sense in arguing over methods. Only the plan itself. You want to save SPECTRE from collapse, and by extension our mutual acquaintances. I want my birthright. Anything else is a means to that end."

Lotte Lenya and Robert Shaw played the two main villains in the James Bond film “From Russia with Love” (1963).

Lenya’s character Rosa Klebb was a high ranking member of the terrorist organization SPECTRE. In Ian Fleming book, she is identified as a lesbian, and this is strongly hinted at in the film.

Robert Shaw’s character Donald Grant is a homicidal maniac trained by SPECTRE to be a ruthless assassin.

In the film, Shaw’s hair is bleach blond. In an early scene he just wears a towel and his fit physique is shaved and glistening with oil. Although it isn’t stated that Grant is gay, his appearance has much in common with physique model of the era.
