hey, have you heard of tennessee williams & truman capote? ma rainey and bessie smith? "fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe" by fannie flagg? these are just a few names out of many. have you heard of the redneck revolt movement? new orleans' annual Southern Decadence festival and the numerous other pride events and rich lgbt communities across the american southeast? are they excluded from your vision of "southern culture?”
that post was a generalization, there are a lot of nuances to southern culture, but there is also a lot of homophobia that can’t be ignored, North Carolina is trying to ban gay marriage again.
That post was made pretty quickly as a one-off, I was surprised it blew up, it wasn’t made to make southerners feel isolated or like they don’t have LBGT+ rights movements, they do and probably more important ones than the rest of us are having at this point in any liberal towns
there is something nice about taking words and repurposing them tho, it wasn’t to spite southerners, but to spite exclusive southern culture which in many parts still has a lot of toxic masculinity and homophobia, it may still have a gay rights culture, but the other parts of it need to be addressed as well
anyway, it’s a pretty irreverent post, it will die down soon enough
