Juvia!!!! 🍊
hi hi!!! thank you for the ask juvia is such a character and is done SO dirty. i'm adding a read more before the answers because i started typing and i realized this is long
this might be controversial but i do not quite consider obsession to be one of her main character traits? it's an underpinning to some things but i think the idea of juvia's obsession overtakes what is important about her. to me the idea of guilt and repentance is absolutely crucial to her (considering how she adorned herself when trying to get in to fairy tail, as well as the scene in which she sacrifices herself for cana in the battle of fairy tail) and there's layers of distance and awkwardness that are compounded by this guilt. juvia, to me, doesn't know how to interact with people and doesn't know how to express what she needs or wants which leads to the obsession in a manner akin to tantalus. her arc and development is then a matter of learning how to be happy from being able to finally have her needs and wants fulfilled.
regarding the fandom, i really deeply think it depends on where you're looking. a lot of the femslash juvia ships handle this better, because a lot of the flanderization of juvia's character comes from her relationship to gray and how that is handled within canon. fairy tail fandom also has a huge issue of not really considering the pairings they write, in my opinion, such that most fics surrounding one ship will have a background assortment of ships that haven't been thought about and then rely on stereotypes of the people involved. which also is again made worse by the fact that fairy tail itself will also sometimes do this. and the misogyny issue.
juvia and pre-fairy tail lucy are FASCINATING to me. this is because i am perpetually lucy-brained and love luvia, but also because i think they're very similar in several regards, we just didn't get the opportunity to see it. lucy has a similarly isolated childhood, tempered only by her relationship to the servants and to her spirits, which is heavily rooted in hierarchy, even if lucy is dedicated to seeing other people as her equals. i think we see this most in early series lucy, who does embarrassing things (trying to seduce the shopkeeper for plue, yelling about how everlue doesn't find her attractive) because of the disconnect between being raised as a piece of meat, essentially, and being able to interact with society outside of that. they both were objectified and harmed by bora, and they both need(ed) to learn how to exist with other people and interact with them as equals and friends without animosity. i'm not certain this could be conveyed in an outsider pov, but some sort of interaction between them before juvia and phantom lord get the request to kidnap lucy, forcing them against each other, but also soon after lucy runs away.
how i'd react to her depends wildly on where in the juvia development timeline we are. i would lose my actual shit if she accused me of being a "love rival" for gray because i am FAR too gay for that and at best apathetic towards him. however i also enjoy the rain and women who are unsettling so i think i'd even be fine with her prior to that fight. i am unfortunately deeply uncreative regarding myself and my interactions with others so that is what i can provide here, as i have very little concept of how she would react to me
i love tormenting characters in general and juvia pining is so good. there's this one luvia fic that i cannot recall the name of right now but i will go find that has juvia getting so continually jealous over gray's interactions with lucy because juvia cannot accept her own queerness but is desperately in love with lucy and is projecting that on to gray, causing her to essentially lash out at both of them and the way that has seared itself into my memory is actually insane. but i also enjoy the comfort of repeatedly offering her kindness and forgiveness, and how juvia herself can twist that into another source of pain due to how frequently she feels the need to repent for things.
as made obvious here, luvia is soooo big to me but all i do for fairy tail anymore is lucy multiship so. obvious. i deeply enjoy juvia's relationship with cana as i think cana's lack of propriety is really interesting with the parts of juvia i've discussed, but also because i do enjoy their canon interactions. and then juvia lucy and cana.... i enjoy juvia and gajeel as well, the phantom lord buddies, but also the idea of them having to redefine their relationship when the culture of their guild changed so drastically from phantom lord to fairy tail. i think juvia and gray can be interesting under the right circumstances, but canon does not care about her enough to be those circumstances and therefore the fandom can be gross with it. i think a lot of juvia's relationships with guild members could be interesting if they actually put consideration into it, but they're less of my focus. i am however also deeply interested in the idea of a potential relationship between juvia and aquarius? another fic i read that i also cannot recall the title of has a section about juvia being able to feel aquarius and her loss due to the fact that lucy summoned her from the water of juvia's body (which also! is not addressed enough), and i think that water connection could be really interesting, especially considering how opposite aquarius and juvia can be? aquarius has had hundreds of years to settle into herself but she is so accustomed to loss that she forces the distance herself, whereas juvia is so accustomed to not having that she tries to force proximity. it's an interesting contrast in my opinion (and maybe would have been better for the outsider pov question from earlier, but this entire ask is stream of consciousness so <3)
i am not entirely certain i have much to fill this section, but i will say that both the way the fandom treats juvia and the way that the actual canon of fairy tail treats her is so deeply misogynistic. it is absolutely fair to be uncomfortable with her or dislike her for the way that she stalks gray but also the amount of people who are entirely willing to write her off as irredeemable for it is insane, and then people who are not against it who are willing to make her entire personality center around a man without thinking critically of that is also deeply gross to me.
anyway. thank you so much for the ask!!! hope this was coherent and fun enough <3
