10. "How was the cult meeting?" "For the last time, family dinner is not-“
The unlocking of a door interrupts Rosé’s tapping of laptop keys and she looks up as footsteps move through the entryway into the lounge.
“Hey” Jan says as she sets her jacket down on a chair and starts to take off her shoes.
“Hey” Rosé reflects, closing her laptop lid and setting it down on the coffee table in front of the couch. “How was the cult meeting?"
"For the last time, family dinner is not” – Jan huffs exasperatedly and cuts herself off. Not bothered to entertain the conversation they’ve had before, knowing that Rosé is more than willing to wind her up again.
“You can’t tell me that a coven assembling from all across the city on the night of a full moon is not a cult activity” Rosé smirks.
“That coven is my family and the full moon just happened to be by chance” Jan doesn’t even know why she bothers to defend it anymore. “But my perfectly normal family gathering was really boring. Thanks for asking.”
Jan suddenly throws a shoe at Rosé who laughs but manages to catch it before it hits her in the face. Then Jan has to admit, “well, we did say grace.”
Rosé’s laughter dies down as she sets the shoe on the ground instead of throwing it back. “Okay, I’ll stop now” she relents. “Did they talk politics again?”
“Mhmm” Jan hums tiredly as she moves over to the couch, lying down and resting her head on Rosé’s legs. “And it was both fascinating and mind-numbingly stupid how traditional they still are.”
Rosé hums as she brings her hand to stroke through Jan’s hair.
“You should come” Jan says as she closes her eyes.
“Gotta say, you didn’t do the greatest job of selling that” Rosé points out.
“Oh, come on” Jan begs. “If you’re there it won’t be so bad for me.”
“No offense baby” Rosé begins, “but I don’t think your family and I will agree on many things.”
“I don’t agree with my family on many things” Jan asserts. “You’ve already met them before anyway. And you’ll need to get to know them better at some point.”
“Okay, fine” Rosé gives in.
“So, you’ll come next time?” Jan checks, opening her eyes again and looking up at her.
“Only so you can keep your sanity.”
“Only for my sanity” Jan pretends that is the only reason that Rosé agreed to it, but she knows that she’ll do it just because she wants her to. Then she snuggles further into Rosé appreciatively, closing her eyes again as Rosé resumes stroking fingers through her hair.
There are a few moments of still and quiet before Rosé chuckles to herself and Jan just knows she’s going to say something stupid. “So… is there like an initiation ceremony?”
