I’m going to assume you mean the 1986 film and not the 1960 one. If you don’t, well, I don’t have any strong opinions on the 1960 one so tough luck there!
I like the film, I think it’s great! Tis what started my thirteen year obsession afterall. It is a perfectly fine film, with a very talented cast that tolerably accurate to its source.
I do take the stance of “the film is its own thing” when I look at it as a lsoh adaptation, as the theatrical ending definitely fits it better but I also hate it, prefer the director’s cut and am still salty over them cutting gas/making Seymour a complete wet noodle.
However! As I said before, I still like it. It is probably one of my favourite films ever!
Rick Moranis. He is the Seymour to me, I genuinely do love his Seymour. The way he plays him is everything to me and I absolutely love the guy to bits! I think he was brilliant casting and works exceptionally well!
Ellen Greene. I absolutely love her Audrey, she smashes it in both the 1982 musical and the 1986 film! I’m not overly fond of the voice direction they went with for her, but it’s the kind of thing that’s only a little jarring when I haven’t watched the film for a while and I can quickly get past it since she simply is an extraordinary actress.
Vincent Gardenia. I’ve said this before (I think), but I generally don’t dislike any Mushnik castings that I’ve come across. The 1986 movie kind of makes Mushnik more irrelevant than one could argue he already is, so there’s not really much to rank. Vincent does a fab job with what he had, which wasn’t a lot.
Steve Martin. I love Steve Martin as a comedian, I like his voice work from the Prince of Egypt and there are many other projects of his that I enjoy. I do not understand how he was cast as Orin. It makes absolutely no sense to me why he was chosen for the role. I wouldn’t change it for anything (expect maybe Tim Curry). It works, it’s a very comedic and far too Elvish-y take on Orin, but for the movie itself: it works. I like it!
Levi Stubbs. THE FUCKING AUDREY II. His voice was a gift to the world.
Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell. Now, I know I’ve said this one before, I like every casting of the urchins I have come across, these three are no exception. In fact! I’d even argue they were my favourites! I love these women and their Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon.
Overall, the film’s great and it means a lot to me
