On August 23, 2020, 29-year-old Jacob Blake (black) was picking up his children when Kenosha police, responding to a domestic dispute, saw him getting into his truck with three of his children inside. Officer Rusten Sheskey (white) grabbed Blake from behind and shot him seven times in the back. As you can tell from the nature of the injuries, Blake wasn't even facing the police when he was shot. He will be paralyzed for life.

Originally there were claims that Blake had threatened the police with a gun, which turned out to be false. Blake has, however, admitted carrying a knife. It was found in the driver’s side floorboard of Blake's truck. The police said it was in his hand, they ordered him to drop it, and he ignored them. The shooting was captured on cellphone video, but it didn't show whether Blake was holding a knife. Conveniently, Unfortunately, there was no body camera footage.

Sheskey claimed that he "feared for his life" before he grabbed Blake from behind and shot him seven times in the back. On January 5, 2021, the District Attorney accepted Sheskey's claim of self-defense, announcing that Sheskey would not be charged with anything. This past Tuesday, the Police Chief also accepted Sheskey's claim, announcing that Sheskey had violated no internal policies and would return to duty without facing any discipline.

Protests ensued after Sheskey shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back while Blake was facing away from him. On August 25, 2020, two days later, Kyle Rittenhouse (white) traveled from Illinois to spend his evening marching through the streets of Kenosha with a semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle. Police who saw him did not order him to drop the weapon, or shoot him in the back; to the contrary, they tossed him a water bottle and stated, "We appreciate you guys, we really do." (This was captured on video.)

Fifteen minutes later, Rittenhouse shot and killed two people and seriously injured a third. Again, the police did not order him to drop his weapon, or shoot him in the back; instead, they let him walk away with his rifle, even while protesters yelled that he had shot people. Rittenhouse returned safely to Illinois without incident.

Like Sheskey, Rittenhouse has claimed self-defense. And it turns out that serving police officers have been donating to Rittenhouse's defense fund, with comments like this:

"God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You’ve done nothing wrong. ... Every rank and file police officer supports you."
