Finding Huskerdust in "Between Takes" by Keith David
So, the wonderful Keith David recently released a Jazz cover album called "Between Takes". Naturally Huskerdust will flood my brain, and I think quite a couple songs fit them really well. Specifically on Husk's developing feelings of Angel.
There are three songs I would like to highlight and it's perfect that they are all in order in the track list. It's like it's telling a little story. I'll only be mentioning some lyrics for each song, but the full lyrics all fit well!
Old Devil Moon
First, we have "Old Devil Moon". I like to think of this song as a way to put into words what Husk was feeling while watching Angel preform Losin' Streak. He was definitely starstruck.
There are some firsts we see from Husk in this moment. We get to see him blush and his voice sounding much higher than it is normally when he's not singing. We also see Husk starting to openly show some attraction to Angel when he stares at his chest fluff. We all saw that Husk!
Lyric Highlights
You and your glance make this romance
Too hot to handle
Stars in the night
Blazing their light
Can't hold a candle
To your razzle-dazzle
I mean come on does that not perfectly describe this scene. Angel never goes up to Husk in his performance, but he maintains a ton of eye contact. Angel knows he has Husk's attention and doesn't need to do anything else but look at him. He is sparkling like a star and is certainly looking hot! Husk can't even move he is so stunned by what he is seeing. I think razzle dazzle is such a fun way to describe Angel's look and performance. Husk had no chance to resist this honestly.
You've got me flyin' high and wide
On a magic carpet ride
Full of butterflies inside
I wanna cry, wanna croon
Wanna laugh like a loon
It's that old devil moon in your eyes
A lot of these lyrics just fit Husk too well. The flying, the mention of magic, the laughing. I think laughing like a loon is my favorite part. He laughs quite a bit in "Love in a bottle", but it's at his most sincere when it's about Angel. His laughs while drinking and gambling are indicators that he is having fun, but he is losing himself in the process. It's only a temporary happiness. His laughs after seeing Angel off are more relaxed and content.
He stews in the happiness for a bit and even puts down his glass. It's enough to satisfy him that he no longer is reaching for another round. He goes back to the hotel, because he gets more laughs and happiness from Angel then he could ever get sitting at the bar and gambling. Look at him, totally the face of someone who lost the ability to love. This spider has somehow wormed his way into his heart. He got this grumpy cat looking like this because of him. He is so smitten.
It's Probably Me
Next, we have "It's Probably Me". I feel this song can connect to what Husk is thinking about on his way back to the Hotel. He is reflecting on all that has happened between them.
We never find out what Husk was going to say to Angel at the hotel, (thanks a lot Vox!), but it seems like he made a realization on something. I believe while walking back, he is starting to think about how he actually feels about Angel. They are good friends by this point, but Losin' Streak definitely opened his eyes a bit to other emotions.
We know Husk claims he has lost the ability to love and of course we have the whole "Love in a Bottle" song. However, when Angel is just himself around him, it's clear he has grown to care for him more than he thought he could.
For the song itself, I think the lyrics convey this in a very Husk way. He is a softy, but he is blunt and probably had an "oh shit" moment when he realized what was happening with his feelings towards Angel.
Lyric Highlights
If the night turned cold and the stars looked down
And you hug yourself on the cold cold ground
You wake the morning in a stranger's coat
No one would you see
You ask yourself, who's watched for me
My only friend, who could it be
It's hard to say it, I hate to say it, but it's probably me
I mean come on this is basically describing the scene before Loser Baby. Angel literally does sit on the ground and hug himself. He feels hopeless and that the only path left to him is to survive until he ends up broken. He doesn't count on Husk to actually try and understand him.
When Husk sings and dance with him, it's the turning point of their relationship. It becomes a genuine connection starting as friends. Angel at this moment, just needs someone to be there and relate to. Husk was able to give that to him. Angel ends up returning the favor in the casino. Husk is now a reliable presence that is willing to be there to lift up Angel and believe he deserves redemption, even if Angel himself doesn't.
You're not the easiest person I ever got to know
but it's hard for us both to let our feelings show
Some would say I should let you go your way
You'll only make me cry
But if there's one guy, just one guy
Who'd lay down his life for you and die
I hate to say It
I hate to say it, but it's probably me
The first two lines really describe the beginning of their dynamic. Husk is at odds with Angel's "act" and just wants Angel to be real with him. Angel uses it as one of his ways to survive his harsh life and contract, but this causes them to clash and not connect on a deeper level.
Despite all that, Husk hangs on and finds a way to reach out to Angel once he understands more about the terrible situation he is in. It would have been easy for Husk to say fuck it and leave Angel alone, which he almost did before Vaggi convinced him. Once he saw how much Angel was struggling, he did the best he could to help. Husk won't admit it, but he has a kind heart.
"Lay down his life for you and die", applies to both of them. A good bit of their dynamic is saving the other when at their lowest or in danger. They both have the problem of willing to throw down their lives for each other. While admirable, it's an issue when both don't have self-worth. I mean Husk gets mad cause he thought Angel was going to die for him. Love yourself Husk please!
I think all of these lyrics paint a picture of all the past stuff Husk is thinking about and recontextualizing it. He is realizing that his feelings go deeper than he thought and maybe it's time to admit that.
Illusions
Finally, we have Illusions, the gut punch. This song is definitely how Husk is feeling about Angel's absence. He just had his eyes opened to how he feels about Angel and then all this terrible stuff happens. He worries about Angel not being at the hotel like he said and then has to see him clearly act weird on TV. When he finds him, he is in bad shape and sees first-hand what he goes through. Husk obviously has some idea what goes on with Angel but actually seeing him drugged and out of it is very different and difficult.
I think the worst part for him is being forced to punch Angel to snap him out of hypnosis. He clearly didn't want to hurt him in any way. He doesn't even really like when Cherri puts him in the sack at first. He wants to be gentle the whole way through. He finally gets some relief when Angel is safe and out of the tower, only to have his heart shattered when he leaves. The man is heartbroken.
Lyric Highlights
I've been searchin' all the corners of my room
Sweeping dust and memories beneath the carpet
That we purchased
Somewhere on some cool retreat,
somewhere in Africa somewhere
Beginning lyrics resemble Husk being back at the Hotel with all the memories of Angel. I wonder if sometimes he visits his old room, now feeling cold and empty. His only solace really is that he can hold fat nuggets, but that's only going to be a mild comfort. He walks around the hotel almost in a daze. Angel on the forefront of his mind. Forced to reminisce instead of making new memories. He has seen what the Vees do to him, and he knows Angel won't be treated well. He must feel powerless not being able to do anything. I'm sure if Angel asked, Husk would drop everything to break him out of V tower, but until then he can't force him back. All he can do is hold onto Cherri's words that he will return and wait. You can tell it's killing him.
I've been trying to catch my breath
From the illusion that I lost it
When you left me
Angel leaving is the saddest Husk has ever looked. He tries to hold Angel's hand softly, to get him to reconsider. His face is full of sadness and desperation. He pleads "come back" in almost a soft whisper. His ears and wings down. From here, he looks so small.
After a while we see him coping the best he can, but the pain has not faded. The recent official Valentines merch actually shows us a bit of how he is handling it. In the keychain design, unlike everyone else's heart, his is broken. In the card he is seen looking at his phone intensely, clearly waiting for a message from Angel. He tries to write funny love poems but ends up with the sincerest one
"Don't need love when it comes a bottle, but I still need you"
Angel leaving is when it fully hit Husk how much he needs him.
Oh boy what a heavy note to end on. I know they will get through it. They are just having a difficult time right now!
Definitely go give some love to Keith David and listen to the full album. It's his studio debut. Hazbin aside, it's just really good jazz music. My personal favorite is "Here's to Life". That made me a little emotional. I believe he has plans for physical versions. Hope those come out soon!
I have Hazbin on the brain and rightfully so, but I still love Helluva Boss as well and can't wait for Season 3! (Hopefully within the next year according to Richard Horvitz). Anyway, after writing my Melvel post, I started thinking if I had any other ships in the hellaverse that weren't the really popular ones. Suddenly I remembered that I actually love Stella x Striker.
I think the appeal for me is these two having a relationship would make them both hypocrites. Striker is an imp who detest royals and takes pleasure in going after what he refers to as "bluebloods". His hatred reaches so deep that he belittles other imps such as Blitzo and Fizzarolli for even be involved with them and finds himself superior. Stella is a royal that is fully content in her status and doesn't care who she has to trample to maintain it, including her own family. She also looks beneath the poor, especially imps, evidenced by how she was more concerned that Stolas slept with an imp than him cheating. They are both everything the other hates.
That's what makes this ship for me. The fact that they should hate each other but yet somehow both of them develop soft spots. I have seen it described as the evil opposite to Stolitz, which I think is very fun. They are both awful sadistic people, who don't care what they have to do to achieve their goals. I would just love to watch them be evil together, unintentionally act like a couple sometimes, and panic when they realize they actually enjoy each other's company.
In honor of my love of this ship being reignited, I thought I would go over some of their interactions in canon through my shipping lens and mention some fun art of them from official merchandise and the cast and crew.
HB-S2EP4, 2023, Artwork by Rafael Cauich Rivera
This artwork by a crew member who works on Helluva Boss and I think perfectly encapsulates why I love these two. Look at them having so much fun being evil. Usually at Stolas' expense.
Harvest Moon Festival
Their first on screen interaction! Striker refers to Stella as Ma'am. It's honestly very polite of him. I know he most likely is just pretending to appease her cause he wants her money, but I still think it's cute. I also find it interesting that while Stella is obviously upset that Striker failed to kill Stolas, she doesn't really berate or insult him personally, which I found surprising. She just says that he better not fail again and that she doesn't care who he has to go through to make it happen. I'm not sure if Striker is the only assassin that uses angelic weaponry, but if he isn't, then it's interesting that Stella is willing to give him a second chance instead of cutting him off.
Another interesting thing is that Striker stays smiling when on the phone and even after off the phone. He doesn't appear to feel disrespected or annoyed at Stella's yelling. There is no need to pretend when he is not talking to her, yet he still seems to be in a good mood. If anything, it's amusing to him. He also makes sure to reassure her that the job will get done. Of course, he wants to do a good job because it will add to his reputation and will give him more negotiating power for more jobs. We see this when he is pitching his services to Crimson and even Millie mentions in "Ghostfuckers" that reputation is everything for assassins in wrath. I think my point is, while he is going to take any job seriously, he doesn't have to pretend to like Stella when she isn't around, or when she can't see his face while talking to him on the phone.
If I were to create a dynamic from this alone. Stella will be pompous and privileged, and angry in Striker's presence, but she will rarely direct it at him personally. It's more like she is venting her frustrations and Striker listens. She doesn't even realize she is doing it. Striker would find some enjoyment watching her complain and would just validate her feelings. He would encourage her bad behavior and if she wanted anything for him to do, he would see it as an opportunity to show off and establish how superior he is to his fellow imps. I don't think that last part is far off from canon, as when Striker is trying to pitch to Blitzo to join him, he mentions that they are both superior to most of their kind, so clearly striker doesn't hold much love to his fellow imps. Stella would find him to be a very reliable partner....in crime of course. 😏
WESTERN ENERGY
We don't see them interact again until Season 2, but boy was it glorious. Clearly Stella informed Striker that she would be meeting Stolas and he just comes in guns blazing. They both look so pleased with themselves, especially Stella. It's actually crazy how much trust Stella put in Striker to not target her, even accidently. The first bullet literally breaks her teacup, and she doesn't even flinch. She gives this look of "yeah that's right", to Stolas and is very proud of herself for ordering this hit. I don't think Striker would go after her in this moment because he still needs her to pay after the job is done, but again accidents can happen. He was shooting a lot of bullets around, but Stella maintained her smile and had full faith he wouldn't hit her. She is entrusting her life to an imp.
This is my favorite interaction between them. Stella contacts him to call off the hit after being persuaded by her brother Andrealphus to keep Stolas alive. She calls him darling and her tone of voice is actually quite pleasant. It's honestly the most polite she has ever sounded in the show. Unlike before, Striker is very unhappy on the phone with her, as he was literally in the middle of killing Stolas. It's like his chew toy got yanked away. Stella does at least seem to have a little understanding for him as she offers to pay him more than what he was originally going to get, if he spares Stolas. That's honestly quite generous for her standards. I'm sure she knows on some level how to use her wealth for her own gain, but with how bratty she tends to be, I would have thought she would have just demanded Striker stop and leave it at that. This isn't to say she respects him, but she at least is aware of how he operates and knows how to get him to do favors for her.
Striker is still pissed about the whole thing, but he does give her a yes ma'am to her proposal which she is pleased by. He stays in a bad mood for a bit after this, but he looks adorable pouting in my opinion. He is just acting in a way that gives him the most money, but it's kind of funny to think about Stella being able to pacify him so easily. I like to think Striker enjoys a lot of Stella's antics because it allows him to be sadistic, so he only gets angry when she restrains him from it. I head canon that if Stella where to invite Striker to one of her parties, he would begrudgingly wear an outfit she picked out because she promised to buy him anything he wants. Those things would probably be weapons or stuff for his horse Bombproof. They fuel each other's terrible personalities.
MERCH ART
Halloween, 2024, Artwork by Voidseeker
This is still my favorite art of them. They both look so good! I wish I was able to get this merch! It looks like Stella is a vampire and Striker is a vampire hunter. Still keeping the dynamic even in costume.
Castle Mug, 2024, Artwork by ZLLM
Got them in their Halloween fits in chibi form. They look so cute! It's funny that they are paired with Stolas and Octavia. You know who is here to have fun and who is here to cause trouble.
Stella & Striker Pose, 2023, Artwork by SilentZound
I mean come on. They just look badass ok! The evil dynamic duo!
I hope I get crumbs of them in Season 3. Even if there is none, these two will always have a place in my heart ❤️
Beelzebub is tied for Stolas as my favorite Helluva Boss character. While I have multiple reasons for Stolas, Bee is mostly so high for me because of her design (also being voiced by Kesha for a bit will earn you some points).
I remember when Queen Bee aired and she first appeared; I was not only starstruck by the incredible animation done on her song, but I thought her entire look was so cool and unique compared to other depictions of Beelzebub that I have seen. Luckily there is a little bit Viv and the crew have shared about her design, so I thought I would look back on it and gush about it. There are some neat ideas in here! Ahhhh I love her so much!!!
The thing that was interesting to me right of the bat was the fact she is more like a fox with bee attributes. At first you think, well that's kind of random for something that typically is portrayed as a fly or bee, but then you realize it makes sense within the hellaverse. Beelzebub is the sin of gluttony, so she rules over the gluttony ring, and in the hellaverse, this ring has an abundance of hellhounds.
Since it's been confirmed in "Mastermind" that Satan created imps, it stands to reason that each sin has created other species. With that in mind, Bee most likely created the hellhounds and of course she would create something that resembles her. With all that in mind, the basis of her design lends some nice worldbuilding and also makes her stand out compared to other Beelzebub depictions.
Now onto to the design itself, I like how they incorporated bee-like traits with her canine body. Her extra set of arms makes it so she has six limbs, just like bee's have. Her black markings on the end of each of her limbs also helps sell the idea of insect legs. Her long eyelashes and the tips of her ears look like antenna and of course she has bee wings.
The most fun part for me is the party girl aesthetic. The cut in her top is shaped like a paw print, which is a cute detail. The lava lamp for her belly and hair is so cool, and they do a great job with the effects. Although its lava, the way her hair is shaped and the prominent orange and yellow color, does remind me of dripping honey, another cool way to tie in her bee elements.
Speaking of colors, her palette is so vibrant! It's a lot of bright pinks, oranges, yellows, blues, but it all meshes well. I think the blue especially ties it all together since it's a cooler toned color, so it breaks up the warm tones a bit. They did a really good job making her colorful without being so saturated that she would hurt your eyes.
There is so much to this design, but I think it all blends well together and really makes sense for this universe. An overindulgence on details is perfect for the Sin of Gluttony.
EARLY ITERATIONS
Bee Early Visual Development, 2023, by Stasya Sher
I always love seeing early sketches and iterations of characters. It's so interesting. Looks like at this stage they had her main concept down. Seems like the main differences is her eyes, the shape of her hair, and the clothes. Which one is your favorite? For me personally, I like A for the dress and hair. A lot of the others have her in some type of ripped clothing, which does work well with her aesthetic! I just think the cute skirt and top could be another fun direction to go in. Her hair in this one with all the swirls does look more like cotton candy, which would have been fitting for Bee as well. Overall, I think the A design would be a fun alternate look.
DESIGN FUN FACTS
The lava lamp theme has a cool in universe function!
When I first read this, I thought it was so clever. This is such interesting way to merge both her sin and the party aesthetic.
The intent behind her being a fox
She reminds me specifically of a fennec fox, which I love!!! So, it just added to my adoration of Bee.
Interesting tidbit about her tail
I assume the tail having more stripes would have been to simulate the shape language of a bee stinger.
Her circus act
I do love these aspects of all the sins; that with Lucifer they were all circus acts. Bee being an animal tamer fits with her wild side and I think she would have a fun time participating in the tricks herself. I hope we get to see all the sins as a circus act in some form one day.
BEHIND THE SCENES EFFECTS
Bombproof
I have always loved bombproof's design, so it was interesting to learn that it was more of a test for Bee. I'm assuming Striker is from the Wrath Ring so he would have gotten his horse from there. Since this ring is filled with lava and stuff, a horse with fire and lava makes sense in context. I like how it all comes together!
Bombproof, 2021, by Sam Miller
Is this not the coolest horse!!! Striker has great taste!
Bee's Hair and Belly
One of the crew members showed one of the rigs they used for Bee's hair.
Bee's Lava Hair, 2023, by Epifex
Reminds me of princess Celestia's hair from my little pony. As a kid I had no idea how they did her rainbow mane, but now I see it's probably a looped rig similar to Bee's hair.
For her lava lamp belly, you can see that they used a green screen first. They did something similar with Stolas for his galaxy cape in Season 1 episode 7.
Clean up shots, 2023, by AnimatedMau
I'm happy the crew shared all this stuff cause I think it's cool to see a little bit behind the process of making these things look good. Especially for a more complex design like Bee.
ALTERNATE LOOKS
Demon Mode
Rage Demon Beelzebub, 2023, by GasuGama
I love full demon bee. She changes into my favorite color palette for her, as her hair and lava lamp look like honey. The cool details of her pupils looking more like an insect and opening a third eye. It's hard to tell in the picture, but in the show her wings get bigger and louder. These are not major changes to her overall design, but it's just enough to convey that as she starts to show off more power, she looks more like an insect. I do wonder if this is her final form or if they will add more features to her in the future. Her tail turning into a bee stinger would be pretty cool!
Halloween Slasher Bee, 2025, by Andreafern4ndez
This is just Halloween merch from last year based on the Queen Xenomorph I believe, so it's not her canon demon form. I don't think it would fit Bee in the actual show, but I think there are some cool elements in here they could potentially add. The extra pair of wings and making her limbs longer and mostly all black could be cool additions. Again, all hypotheticals. I love her design as it is now. I think the Xenomorph design could be used for something like a Helluva Boss Horror AU.
Writing about her more insect features also made me realize, that Mammon also turns into an insect when in full demon mode. He appears to be more like a spider or a centipede. There could be some parallels with that, as gluttony and greed are often compared or mistaken for each other. Don't know if that intentional in any way but I think it's an interesting thing to take note of.
Court Outfit
My favorite outfit from her easily. I like that it's a more formal version of her regular clothes with added accessories. Her top has the same paw cut in the middle, but now the rest of it reaches up her neck a bit. She also has this cute heart belt on. The orange scarf around one of her arms is interesting. Could just be a nice little detail (and probably is), but maybe it has some significance. My head canon is that it's something her boyfriend Vortex gave her and it's a way of having a piece of him with her in more serious situations.
She stays in that honey color scheme, again my favorite. This palette only uses three main colors, so I think it inherently makes Bee look a little more serious compared to when she is at a party. I noticed in her tail, she has at least three stripes flowing across. It's really cool in motion. This could be them figuring out a way to add stripers to the tail, as Viv mention it was removed before for complexity. I'm happy they could add the detail back in. Like I said previously, I think it's meant to look like the stripes across a bee. She also has stripes in her shorts and jacket.
I could be wrong, but I think the shoulder pads on her are supposed to be Epaulettes. It's supposed to be used as an insignia of rank in armed forces or other organizations. This suits Bee very well considering her rank as a deadly sin.
BONUS COLOR PALETTES
Bee's colors change quite a bit during "Cotton Candy" and I love all of them. Thought I would name them for fun.
Honeycomb
Pretty self-explanatory. All these colors just scream honey!
Bubblegum Pop
This one feels very pink and bubbly. She is singing like a pop star as well, so I thought it was nice little double meaning.
Party Animal
I mean this name just describes Bee in general, but this color scheme feels the most neon, which can be associated with nightlife, so I thought it fit best here.
This isn't officially confirmed anywhere, but this color scheme in particular can be seen as a reference to one of Viv's old characters JayJay, from her comic series Zoophobia.
Jayjay, 2014, by Vivziepop
The blue and purple for Bee's fur and hair do appear to be similar. The reason why she would be specifically referenced is really cool. Jayjay was the main character featured in Viv's fanmade animated music video of "Die Young" by Kesha. It's almost like a full circle moment that Viv would end up getting to work with Kesha on her own show in the form of Queen Bee. Sadly, the music video on Viv's channel was taken down (potentially for copyright???) but you can still find it on the internet.
These next two colors schemes were not in the final show. I'm not sure if these were concepts or just one of the crew members having fun, but they look cool regardless.
Full Moon
This one went all in on referencing Jayjay. It's got all the blues, reds, and purples. Since Jayjay is a werewolf, I thought using an iconic part of werewolf lore seemed appropriate.
Palette Switch, 2023, by DarkCrowl
Strawberry Daiquiri
This is by the same crew artist and has Bee in a dress as well. I imagine she would be wearing this fit on a night out at a bar. Naming this after a red cocktail seemed appropriate.
Dress Bee, 2023, by DarkCrowl
What a surprise this turned into a longer ramble then I intended, but I'm having fun so that's what matters!
Still one of my favorite Vivziepop designs all these years later!
Also shout out to Rochelle Diamante for being the singing voice and now voice actor for Bee. She really sounds like Kesha it's crazy.
I want to talk about the rest of the sins at some point because I love all of them!
History of Pilot Velvette and How Her Redesign Made Me Fall in Love with Her
So, in the spirit of the whole look of my blog, I thought my first real post should be about Velvette. With season 2 putting her in many different outfits, I saw people in the fandom doing rankings and thought it would be fun to do my own as well. Before I do that though, I wanted to ramble a little about something first. As I was going through her outfits, in the back of my mind I was thinking about her pilot design.
I was always interested in the vees and was excited to see them in the show proper, but I clearly had favorites. I was curious about Velvette but wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to know about her compared to Vox and Valentino. At the time I just chalked that up to just having very little information about her. After all, Val was clearly going to be important for Angel's story, which was made very clear by the Addict music video. Meanwhile Vox was being set up as a rival for Alastor in one of the old Hazbin Hotel comics.
***If you don't know what I'm talking about, there were two comics written by Viv that were released during the pilot era. One featuring Angel Dust and another one featuring Alastor. The one I'm referring to in particular is Alastor's. It's most likely not canon anymore, as you can't find it on the website, but the wiki still has a record of it if you want to read it. I think it's still worth a look!***
My point is Velvette really didn't have much information in comparison. There were little bits of info here and there scattered about, but you really had to piece things together to get a general impression of her. We mostly just knew she was part of the Vees and was potentially the social media overlord. That lack of information is why I thought she fell under the radar for me. But then when season 1 was being promoted and the vees were revealed, something shifted.
WHO IS THIS DIVA!!!!!
Velvette easily had the most changed in her design from pilot to show. Immediately I was so much more interested in her and the dynamic she had with the others. Once she fully appeared in the show, I was hooked and never let go. Season 2 in particular just fueled my love for her even more. Looking back at all this, I want to really analyze why her redesign really improved her for me before the show was even out. Don't get me wrong, I liked her first design, but it clearly didn't grab me as much as her current one. So here I am, after all that rambling, ready to take a look back into Velvette's design!
*For reference, everything in red and indented is a side note. Velvette's name was spelled Velvet during the pilot era, so I will be using that spelling when referring to the pilot design*
VELVET
Despite not being able to see her doll joints in this outfit, you can definitely gleam a doll-aesthetic from this. I think a good descriptor of this kind of look would be in the realm of dollcore. This is an aesthetic inspired by both modern and vintage ball-jointed dolls, particular from Japan. It definitely has some aspects from that, like the dress with its puffy sleeves, the frills in her skirt and hair pieces, and the white eyeliner makeup. Even the way her expression is here kind of reminds me of a doll whose eye got a little out of place.
As I mentioned I still do quite like this design. I believe it fits in terms of what some of her characterization appeared to be in the pilot era, which I think is also important when talking about her design. Velvet didn't have much during that time but there were a couple things that included her. From what I remember, these would be used by the fandom to piece together what her character could have intended to be.
PILOT
Starting with the pilot itself, we have one of the few shots that includes the vees.
From this small interaction we can infer a few things. That Velvet is perhaps a little whacky and silly by the way she moves. She purses her lips up at Vox and gets up in his space, (which she probably knows annoys him) and then stretches her arms out before taking a selfie with him. It's only a few seconds but compared to Vox and Valentino, Velvet has the most outward movement. Her big wide smile could also suggest that she is a little unhinged. We see this more clearly in the next frame.
Her smile and eyes are very wide, which if nothing else shows how excited she is. We can also guess that she is younger than the two by the way she interacts with Vox and her phone. Vox very much looks like a disgruntled older man when Velvet gets all close and pulls out the phone. Velvet immediately really focuses on her phone afterwards, either implying she is about to post the picture or is just really into using it. Compare this to Valentino, who is also on his phone, but he clearly is looking at it for more practical reasons. In this scene he is receiving texts from Angel. This gave us the idea that her main thing would be social media and since that is associated with younger generations, she is naturally younger than Vox and Val.
Her other appearance in the pilot can be easily missed, but it's during the time Vaggie is explaining how dangerous Alastor is. There is a graphic of Overlords shown and she is in the corner.
Her teeth are noticeably sharper in this picture. It adds to that feeling of her maybe being a little crazy.
Again, all of this mostly speculation and with hindsight from the actual series this is probably clearer now, but I think it starts to paint a good picture of what I and others thought would be her character.

Next thing we can look at is previous livestreams either Viv herself was a part of or some past crew members. This is where we would usually get little tidbits and lore about the characters. Obviously, a lot of information is now changed or outdated, but it is what we had to go on at the time. I'm not sure of the exact number of instances that Velvet was talked about, but there are at least two confirmed livestreams where she was mentioned.
The first one was in January 2020, a charity livestream for the Australian Wildfires. Viv was asked a question about Vox and Velvet. You can listen for yourself as the livestream is still up, but I will do a little paraphrase here as well. The question was asking if Viv could tell us anything about Vox and Velvet's personalities.
Viv responds that Velvet is really energetic, stylish and trendy. She is someone that can keep up with trends easily and that's why her and Vox get along very well. Both characters have gone out of their way to follow the march of technology, so they are both pretty modern. Viv also mentions that Velvet is really good with food and potion making.
*Except for maybe the food part, looks like most of this made it into the show. I'm glad the potion making was kept, I think it's really cool*
Next, we have a livestream from Faustisse, who was a former illustrator and visual developer for Hazbin Hotel. They left the project in 2020 to pursue their own work, but before that they did livestreams and talked about character and worldbuilding lore. Unfortunately, they have removed all the streams from their channel, but someone did make a little transcript of that one in particular. A lot of the information Faustise provided is very outdated now but it's cool to look back at potential earlier concepts. The brief mentions of Velvet are:
Vox, Valentino, and Velvet are all close friends
Velvet is batshit crazy, Vox and Valentino are about equal when it comes to levelheadedness
VOXTAGRAM
I think all that's described and shown in the pilot and livestreams bleeds a little into how she appears and acts in the Voxtagram era.
***For context, the Voxtagram era was when people, presumably from the spindlehorse crew, would make Instagram's for the characters and run them like it was actually the characters posting on there. Sometimes different characters would interact in the comments. These were made for fun and were never meant to be canon, so they are now archived probably to avoid confusion. I still think it was a fun interaction with the fandom while we were waiting for the show to come out. For me it was kind of funny having all of them in my following tab. Luckily a tumblr blog archived a lot of them, so we can still look back at them despite the accounts themselves no longer being available***
I'm not going to go through every voxtagram post but will highlight some ones that I think shows Velvet's personality a little. If you want to see them all, check out the Voxtagram archive on Tumblr, they did us a great service by not letting these become lost media.
For reference, her username is radvelvetcakes
This appears to be the photo she took in the pilot, which is a cool reference. Vox is definitely giving that look of, "ok I'll do this for the brand"
We can see her doing her nails and potentially her makeup as well with the glitter also appearing on her face. This is leaning into the stylish aspect of her character.
Here we can see that energetic and potentially childish side of Velvet. She seems to enjoy messing with both Vox and Valentino.
Appears to be showing her crazier side, with her clearly having fun helping Valentino kill. This is one of the few times we see her with a knife as well. Maybe it was intended to be her main weapon for killing. Valentino is giving her a nice head pat; she looks very proud.
This next post is from Valentino's Voxtagram and has a long thread of comments between Vox, Val, and Velvet. A funny gag in this era was that Stolas from Helluva Boss would frequently go into Valentino's comments and roast him. The context of this particular thread is Valentino arguing with Stolas, while Vox and Velvet watch and comment in entertainment. I didn't include the full thing as I wanted to focus on Velvet's comments but it's all very funny. Username refences, voxtagram_8k is Vox, moth_pimp is Valentino, and daddy_hoothoot is Stolas.
A few things to take away from this is that
Velvet bakes, such as cookies and based on her username, cakes
She frequently threatens to run away from home
Jokes about Vox and Valentino being her dads
I will note that the voxtagrams were mostly the crew and not Viv herself, so we can't know how much her characterization was accurate to Viv's vision at the time. However, since the fandom didn't have much to go on, this definitely shaped how we viewed the character.
VELVET'S CHARACTER
With all these little bits of info, at least for me personally, this was the general impression I had of what Velvet was going to be like.
One of the three Vee's, Velvet is highly energetic and a little insane. She is in tune with the latest trends and is very stylish, suggesting that she is an overlord of social media. While being somewhat crazy compared to the others, especially with her big knife that doesn't appear to be used just for cutting cakes, she gets along well with her fellow vees. She has fun messing with Vox and Valentino, appearing to act almost like a daughter figure to them. Don't let her childish acts let you forget that she is still an overlord, and you should watch out for her potions.
This was just a little description I wrote for fun, but that was the general vibe I was getting from her character.
PILOT DESIGN
With all this additional context, let's go back to talking about her design a little more. With her presumed characterization in mind, this design does fit in some ways. Really what I think was holding it a little back for me is her supposed place in the story, she doesn't feel like an overlord equal to Vox and Valentino. I think part of it is leaning too heavily in the doll aesthetic. She doesn't feel like the overlord of social media, just that she participates heavily in it. I can see her fashion aspect a little, but I think in the vein of she would dress up a lot or be dressed up by Valentino or Vox, like a doll. Her style feels too vintage and doesn't look like she is keeping up with modern trends. Again, while she is supposed to be a doll, I think the rest of her character gets a little lost in that.
The Vees, 2020, Artwork by Vivziepop
This design to me communicates to me a childish energetic girl who is a bit sinister. Which isn't a bad thing at all, and I think visually she looks interesting. I like the tricolor scheme and think how it's distributed is very pleasing. The colors in a way separate parts of her body, as if they were pieces put together, which can play into her doll theme. Her rougher hairstyle in the form of pigtails, the stripped sleeves, and the cute pom poms on her shoes all add to a more youthful, childlike appearance. This might be a stretch on my part, but the triangle shapes on her waist and the bottom of her dress can be seen as V's with the negative space, I think that's a nice touch. It's a nice design for a cute but crazy girl, which is a part of her personality. I tend to gravitate to these types of characters, so why didn't she grab me as much? Was it just the fact I couldn't visualize her as an overlord on Vox and Val's level?
I think the discrepancy between her design and story status was part of it, but with all this reflecting I have found another reason. It's clear that her archetype for me was already being fulfilled by Niffty. Even though Niffty didn't have much screentime in the pilot, she was at least able to showcase her personality and unlike Velvet, she had some voiced lines. Niffty is a cute design, but she is very unhinged and crazy, which we love her for. I think in the back of my mind, Velvet to me would have felt a little redundant. You could make the argument that both of them could have been counterparts. Velvet acting like an evil daughter with Vox and Valentino in comparison to Alastor and Niffty's dynamic. I think that could have interesting AU potential.
But back to my point, Velvet's niche was already being filled by Niffty. With Velvet not giving us much to go on in comparison, she had my curiosity, but not my full attention. At the time I thought maybe it was just because Velvet didn't have any screentime outside of the few seconds in the pilot, so I assumed I just needed to see her in the show with a voice to get more interested.
BOY WAS I WRONG!! Just seeing her new design, without hearing her voice or seeing her in the show, I was captivated 💕
SHOW VELVETTE
😍 Just absolute diva and queen 😍
But let's get into specifics. The main points I want to touch on is clothes, colors, and body language. I won't be mentioning anything that occurs in the show, because I didn't need it to love this design.
First thing I want to focus on is that immediately she feels much more modern. We do lose a bit of the doll aesthetic, but I think that is a fine compromise as it's not the most important thing to communicate right away. You can even relate her look to a Bratz doll. Instead of the big dress, she has a more fashionable business look with the long pants, crop top, and a sleek fur coat. She also has nice addition of the heart belt and skull earrings for little accessories.
She actually retains some design elements from her previous design; it's the way it's executed here that makes all the difference. She has the same pom pom shoes but now they have a heel added to them. The fingerless gloves are present but are no longer attached to ruffles and have a darker color palette. She still wears her hair in pigtails, but they are much neater and smooth while still being a very fun and interesting shape. Her bangs are smoothed out as well. I think they did a good job of using some of her old design and making it more modern. She now definitely reads as a fashionista who keeps up with trends.
*I want to gush again about her pigtails; I love them so much! I just really like the swirly shape of them. The white highlights in them are also fun. It's so satisfying to me*
Her color distribution is handled differently as well. She was mostly white in her previous design, but now it's more of an accent color, instead she is in deeper blues, reds, and purples. I think the prominent white with the dress in the pilot gave her a more whimsical and innocent feel, which may have been the point to contrast her more crazy personality. The shift in color palette in the show gives her a more professional but still threatening tone with the darker colors.
Last thing I want to touch on is her body language. Her expressions appear more confident and controlling. Her eyes are more focused, her smile doesn't go as wide compared to the pilot, and she poses with more intention. Let's take a look at the Vee's promo image again. Velvette doesn't appear out of place anymore. She looks just as sinister as the other two, which I think includes the way her eyes and smile are drawn. In the pilot era, even when we see her eyelids, Velvet's eyes maintained that circular shape. Now they allow her eyes to be more angular and sharper.
This Velvette fully convinced me she was an overlord equal to Valentino and Vox. She still retains a youthful appearance compared to the other two, but she looks like a more mature older woman who knows how to play the game. Velvet was giving "I'm just a girl", Velvette is giving "try me bitch".
Once she fully appeared in the show, I was even more convinced that the pilot design would not have worked. Funny enough, we can see Velvette briefly in her old design when she calls Vox in Season 1 episode 2. It's his contact picture for her.
Even here there is some subtle differences compared to the original. Her bangs are a little messier, but it's clearly based on her new hairstyle. Her fingernails are colored black and looks like her ruffles are white instead of red. The changes are small, but I think it helps to fit the current Velvette better. I think it would be cool to see her wear briefly in the show, since she changes outfits so much, but it not being her default look was the right move. I have seen screenshot edits of her in the show with her original design with nothing changed and think it just looks off and clashes with the way she is currently.
*Also love her facial expression in this picture. She looks so silly and cute. I wonder when Vox took the photo*
Now with all that said, I'm grateful with the direction they took with Velvette. I probably would have liked her regardless, just not as much as I do now. Her previous design and characterization could have worked, but I prefer the #Bitch we now all know and love. Season 2 especially let her shine with all the different outfits. I can't imagine how much work that was, the team did a great job!
Speaking of outfits. This whole thread came about after ranking all of Velvette's different outfits. Man, I really derailed myself there. You think I was writing a research paper. I'm going to make a separate thread going over my outfit rankings. Let's see if I can manage not to ramble as much in that one! If you made it to the end, thank you so much for reading. I hope my word vomit was if not entertaining, then at least a little informative.
Hey, I made a few doodles of your OTP (and kinda mine too) for you! I just wanted to make sure you saw it! I tagged you in it, but I don't think it worked? It's tagged with you, just in case (roseramblings)
Nope, I didn’t get any notification! Weird. Lemme check.
