🎃 if you’re still accepting them !!
🎃 - attempt to scare my muse
emiko would not be able to tell you how she found herself in the common space with lena, of all people, on a friday night. perhaps it was that they were both fledglings forced to stay in the manor and with nowhere else to go, that’s where they found themselves. she had a book in her lap, long forgotten as she listened to the immortal princess, though her bored expression did not change. minutes ago, the younger girl had demanded her attention and she reluctantly gave it, not that she would admit herself to being bored as well.
but that seemed like a mistake as her brows furrowed and she resisted in asking another question. emiko had interrupted lena five times since the royal began her storytelling, and was threatened with no ending if she did so again. naturally, she had responded with a scoff, but did keep her lips sealed. old stories like these were not always written down, and it could serve to be important for her research. or so she reasoned to herself. ( if she really let her mind wander, she’d wonder if this was what sleepovers were like, something she rarely had growing up ).
“...so the couple went up the hill with the cake...”
that was one more inconsistency that she wanted to point out, nails scratched her palms to keep them silent, and she took a sip of her drink instead.
“...and just as they heard a sound from behind them, the door of the house opened...”
noticing that the story was about to end, emi had unconsciously leaned in, curiosity at what happened unmasked. fingers gripped the cup in her hands, anticipation to know the couple’s fate.
“...the lady turned around to accept it, and smiled as she spoke, ‘oh, that unmarked plot? it’s reserved.’
‘for who?’ the man asked.
'for... YOU.'” the shout from lena came out of nowhere, loud and echoed in the room. it had startled emi more than scared her, indicated by the slight jolt of her shoulders. if she wasn’t holding the mug, she’d probably have jumped and somehow she was grateful that she’d already been using it as an anchor for the suspense.
she let out a deep sigh, frown evident, as lena smiled, all teeth and giggles. “that... was a terrible story.” she shook her head.
“since you spend all your time in the library, do you have a better one then?” a challenge.
and emiko was not one to back down from a challenge.
the corner of her lips tugged into a grin as she recalled the stories she’d heard when she was younger. especially old tales from her ancestors’ country, ones she and her sister had stumbled upon. “well...”
