How to Snog a Girl: Practical Lessons on Finding and Securing an Appropriate Match
They were in their dorm late one night in their third year. Evan was sprawled out on the floor going on about some sixth year girl's arse. Evan was almost pathologically obsessed with girls' arses and Regulus didn't see the appeal, but he hummed in agreement all the same. He didn't want Evan to think he was strange or defective.
"I heard she got caught snogging Arjun Patel behind the greenhouses," Evan said wistfully. "I bet it was lovely. Her lips look so soft. I wonder what they feel like."
"Well," Regulus said, propping himself up on his elbows. "I doubt I'll ever find out."
Much to his chagrin, Evan started laughing. "Not if you go around saying things like that you won't! Nobody wants to snog a loser. You have to have confidence."
Regulus groaned. "That is precisely the problem," he said in a soft whine. "I haven't got any of that."
Evan grinned at him. "We'll get you some. Don't worry."
The summer after his third year was a dismal one. Sirius was at Potters' house for an entire month, and even when he was home he was constantly talking to Potter or writing to one of his other useless friends. For reasons that eluded Regulus, neither of their parents seemed keen to intervene. They allowed Sirius to do as he pleased, focusing all of their energy on Regulus instead. It was decidedly uncomfortable.
Over dinner one evening, his mother commented that he was getting older and asked him if he had thought about dating prospects. Regulus nearly choked on his roast lamb. "You should be making connections with the young ladies in your year," she instructed. "The well bred ones at any rate."
"I--Well--I'm. Working on it," he said weakly. "E-Evan is helping."
His mother gave him an odd look and his father frowned at him over the notebook he had been perusing. Regulus blushed, realizing that he had said something wrong, although he was not sure what. "Evan is good with girls," he muttered, ducking his head.
"You should not take advice from your competition," his mother said mildly. "I thought we raised you better than that."
"Right. Of course. Sorry."
"I can give you advice," Sirius said with a smirk. Regulus glared at him. "I can't get the ladies to leave me alone. And I have no interest in the type of girl you're liable to be courting, so there is no danger of competition."
He looked directly at their mother as he made the last statement, but she just nodded and said, "Good to see you taking your responsibilities as an older brother seriously for once, Sirius."
Sirius stared at her open-mouthed. If Regulus wasn't feeling utterly humiliated by the conversation (and equally confused by their mothers' reaction--or lack thereof) he might have laughed at Sirius.
Regulus couldn't be sure whether it was intentional or not, but Sirius' and Evan's advice was terrible, and all of Regulus' attempts to win the attention of his female classmates had failed miserably. He said as much to Evan in the winter of their fourth year.
"Are you sabotaging me on purpose?" he asked, his eyes narrowed in suspicion.
Evan rolled his eyes. "Why would I be doing that?"
"To get me out of the way, so you can have all the girls to yourself."
"If that's what I wanted, I would just leave you to your own devices. You do a fine job repelling the fairer sex without any assistance."
Regulus frowned. "Maybe that is just what you want me to think."
Evan sighed. "I assure you, I am not in the least bit worried you are going to steal anyone I fancy away from me."
Regulus huffed. "I might!"
"No," Regulus agreed with a sigh, flopping onto his back on his bed. "You are right, of course. I fuck it up every time."
Evan hopped onto Regulus' bed and laid on his stomach next to Regulus. "Your problem is that you're so bloody intimidated by them. If you did manage to get someone to snog you, you'd probably freeze up and die on the spot."
Regulus' frown deepened as he stared at the ceiling. "How do I fix that?"
The moment the words left his mouth, his head was pulled to the side and his lips were covered by a warm, wet sensation. Evan's hands cradled Regulus' head almost delicately as he snogged Regulus with alarming fervor. He was panting when he finally pulled away, wiping his mouth with his sleeve.
"Wh-what?" was all Regulus could say, as he brought his hand up to his lips in a daze.
"See? Not scary at all, is it?"
Regulus nodded silently, although privately he felt that this was the most terrifying thing to ever happen to him.
Regulus thought that he might finally understand the appeal of a girl's arse as he watched Tilly Mayfield dive into the Black Lake in just her panties and a t-shirt the night after their last O.W.L. exam. He had hardly spoken to her in the five years they'd been at Hogwarts together, but that likely worked in his favour. Nothing good came of opening his mouth. He took a sip from the bottle of Firewhiskey Evan had given him and sat down at the edge of the pier, dangling his legs in the water.
After what felt like an eternity, he was rewarded by Tilly swimming up next to him. "Aren't you going to swim?" she asked.
Regulus shook his head. "No, thank you. I have seen what the lake water looks like. And what lives in it. This is risky enough, but I would rather just scrub my legs than scour my whole body."
Tilly giggled. It was dark and Regulus couldn't see her face clearly, but it didn't sound like she was mocking him. "You're funny," she said.
Regulus took another sip of Firewhiskey and didn't say anything. He had learned that it was wiser to let a girl do most of the talking and only chime in occasionally with enthusiastic agreement. Girls needed a great deal of validation and they were shockingly incapable of handling differing opinions, but they could hardly be blamed for that, Regulus supposed. They just weren't made of the same stuff as men.
Tilly chatted about some inane thing or another, then reached over to grab the Firewhiskey out of his hands and take a sip. She carefully placed it back on the pier before grabbing Regulus' arms and pulling him into the water.
"What the fuck!" Regulus shouted indignantly.
Tilly giggled again and put her hands on his shoulder. "Don't worry," she said. "I'll help you get clean afterwards."
Then she leaned forward and kissed him. Regulus was distracted by the shock of the cold water and panic about all the creatures and contaminants held within, and his mind was buzzing from the Firewhiskey, but it wasn't entirely unpleasant.
"I do not mean to be rude," he murmured as she pulled away. "But I would very much like to get out of the lake."
"Mmkay," she responded, hauling herself up onto the pier. Even in this horribly uncomfortable state, Regulus had to admit that he definitely saw the appeal of her arse. She offered him a hand to help him up. "Can I tell you something?"
"Is it an apology for dragging me into this cesspool?"
"No. Well. Yes, I am sorry about that. But no. I was going to say that you're the first person I ever kissed. It was a lot nicer than I expected."
Regulus smiled slightly. He grabbed the bottle of Firewhiskey and took a long drink before offering it to her. "You're the first girl I ever kissed," he admitted. "Although I have to say, I wasn't expecting it to be quite so wet. And cold. And filthy."
"Yeah," Tilly replied, sounding a bit sheepish. "Cold isn't ideal is it? Sorry. I'll make it up to you?"
They were in the library studying for their N.E.W.T.s. Or rather, Regulus was studying for his N.E.W.T.s. Evan was flipping aimlessly through a text book and groaning loudly every few minutes.
"Will you knock it off?" Regulus asked.
"I cannot, Reg," Evan moaned. "I am heartbroken."
Regulus sighed and rolled his eyes. Tilly Mayfield had broken up with Evan a fortnight ago, and Evan had not shut up about it since. Regulus had never told Evan about his night by the lake with Tilly, and so it really wasn't fair to hold it against him, but Regulus couldn't help but feel annoyed all the same when they got together. Perhaps his mother had been right about competition. "You were barely together two months. I think you will live."
"I think I shall die," Evan declared. "I shall never know joy again."
Regulus pushed aside his notes in frustration. "You are being ridiculous ."
"You are being ridiculous! Expecting me to care about exams when I am distraught."
"I am not expecting you to care about exams. It does not matter to me if you fail all your N.E.W.T.s. I am simply expecting you to let me revise in peace."
"Heartless," Evan muttered.
Evan glanced around the library. "We should go somewhere else," he said.
"So you can comfort me properly. I am lonely, Reg."
Regulus felt his face flush. He wanted to tell Evan no, wanted to say he was tired of 'comforting' his mate any time he felt rejected by some dim witted girl. He tried very hard to make his mouth say the words.
"Yes, alright," he said with a sigh. "If it will shut you up."
