Writing Project! Ross 248

So, I might turn this blog into a semi-writeblr and make semi-regular updates on my progress on Ross 248. Might help.

Current progress: 4,022 words. Goal: Short Novel length of maybe ~50,000 words.

Ross 248 is a science fiction story set between the years of 2318 and 2321, during what becomes known as the Thetai War. During it, the main character has a meteoric rise through the ranks of the Acidalian Intersolar Colonial Navy, ending up commanding a starship (probably the A.S.V. Ross 248). I’m technically still writing up the end of the plot. I might change the name at some point.

So in the first chapter and what I’ve got of the second, the main character and her current situation are introduced. Francis Morgan is a young woman studying at the Acidalia City Naval Academy. She is focusing on Command and Warp Engineering. Francis was born without a right arm, subsequently she grew up to be left handed and has a prosthetic right arm.

Francis lives in a modest three-bedroom apartment on the eighteenth floor near the eastern wall of Dome Nine, one of many habitation domes in Acidalia City, on Mars. She lives there with her mother Jo and her younger sister Belinda.

Belinda takes an interest in archaeology and history. Her teacher for Calculus is a member of an alien species, a Daerak.

Most of the basic setting of at least the Solar system has been introduced, but little detail has been introduced for the Acidalian Intersolar Colonies outside of Mars, nor any of the Daerak nations. The Sereki have yet to be introduced. Earth is currently in a nuclear winter as a result of a war hundreds of years ago, which was what pushed humans to quickly settle Mars.

What has been established about the Daerak, however, is that one of their homeworld’s exports is fish and seafood.

This is the part of writing I don’t like so much. In my head, the setting is laid out, all ready to be poured into the reader’s brain. Now I actually have to write the pouring. Let me get to my space battles!

So I decided to make a few bootleg Spacedock episodes about my starships! Episode 1: Democracy class Light Cruiser.

I’m thinking I might do a few little videos in the same vein as Spacedock and the Templin Institute about my ships and nations in Ross 248. It’d help potentially promote the story for beta readers and plus it’d be fun. Might even help me flesh out the background of the story.

Starting to write Ross 248. It’s actually been a while since I’ve tried to write something properly, so I’m a bit out of practice. I’ve downloaded a program called Bibisco (good free alternative to Scrivener if you’re penniless like me), it’s been a good help.

Plus, to top it all off, I found a song (The Islander by Nightwish) which is giving me more ideas but for a different story. I’m fine planning the story, but having trouble getting into gear to write it.

Dammit brain, focus on writing! I know I like the song, get to work already.
