I've seen a lot of people on social media describe Pekiwewin as a “homeless camp.” While there are people there who are houseless, it is so much more than that. It is a community on sacred ground. It is a place where a grassroots group of young people are filling gaps left by the City and Province in the wake of the closures of Kinsmen and Expo Centre. It is a visible reminder that we need to do better as a city and a province on the issue of houselessness, and that the unhoused are our neighbours and community members and should be treated as such.
