Santa Was A Redhead: A Lucille Ball Christmas Story...as told by Lucy's friend, Olavee Martin. 'The day before Christmas—four, maybe five years ago—the phone rang and it was Lucy. "I've got something to do," she said, "and I want you to help me." Ten minutes later, she picked me up and headed for a Christmas tree lot. She bought a Christmas tree, a real beauty. Then we went shopping. She bought all sorts of pretty knickknacks, plus hand lotion, body lotion, dusting powder, shampoo and perfume—everything dear to the feminine heart. AND practical. Then we went to a gourmet food store, where she found some very special champagne and picked out all sorts of hors d'oeuvres. I had no idea what we were doing and she didn't explain. We went to another store and bought Christmas tree lights and decorations. The car was stuffed with trimmings and presents and smelling beautifully of pine when we headed for Hollywood. We stopped, finally, in front of an apartment building. "This is where I need a little help," she said. Between the two of us, we carried up the tree, the packages, and knocked on the door. It took a while before the lady opened it. She was pale, obviously very ill, and without hope. She was Lillian Goodman, who, years before, was a well known vocal coach to many, many of the top stars. Lucy had been one of them. Now Lillian had become ill and life had lost its meaning. "What are you doing?," she asked as we came in lugging all this stuff. "What d'you think we're doing?," demanded Lucy. "It's Christmas! We're going to decorate your tree!" Which we then proceeded to do. I'll never forget that afternoon as long as I live because the memory of it is so touching. Lillian Goodman sat there and her face began to change, to shine. Friday night at The Owl

Jake Jolliff and Wyndham Baird played a great set of traditional tunes, with excellent harmony singing and solid instrumental work, at The Owl in Brooklyn NYC on Saturday, 1/14/23. I've been getting The Owl's emails since just before the pandemic set in, but this is the first time I've been there.

Grant Gordy and Ross Martin opened with a range of tunes from blues to bebop, sensitively executed.

I knew all the musicians well, but hadn't seen them since the pandemic. Wow, they've improved and matured. And I've missed them.

But the surprise of the night was The Owl itself. I really liked the sound of the room. Great audience. Perfect size. Lovely feel to the place. The Owl has a lot of musicians I don't know, but now that I've been there, I might just go some night and hear someone new.

Remembering Ross Martin who passed away 39 years ago (July 3rd). Ross and his wife Olavee were very close friends of Lucy and Gary. Ross was a a veteran actor of the stage, radio and screen who dabbled in directing. His directorial debut came on the 'Here's Lucy' episode "Lucy, Part-Time Wife" and he would direct Lucy again a few episodes later in "Lucy And The Raffle". He also appeared with Lucy and John Wayne in 'Swing Out, Sweet Land', a patriotic TV special in 1971 and a couple of appearances on "Password". Lucy was very close to the Martins and affectionately referred to Ross as "The Professor" and Olavee as "Princess".
