Scots Presbyterians in 17th Century Rotterdam
Scottish Presbyterians have been worshipping in Rotterdam in the Netherlands for almost 400 years. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the Port of Rotterdam had a sizeable Scots community with people seeking trade and work. In 1642 the "Lords of Rotterdam" decided they should build a church for the Scottish people and asked the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to provide them with a minister. They sent the Rev. Alexander Petrie, a minister from the Perth area, who arrived in August 1643. The Scots congregation used a chapel in Lombardstraat which had been built for the Society of Crossbowmen and called after their patron saint, St. Sebastian. This church provided a safe refuge for many Covenanters during the times of persecution and many people fled Scotland for the safety of Rotterdam. Scottish ministers were also trained and ordained here including the Lion of the Covenant, the Rev Richard Cameron, who was ordained in Rotterdam in 1679. After his return to Scotland he would later be killed at the Battle of Airds Moss in July 1680. After the end of the Persecution the congregation had grown and by 1690 had two ministers and about 1000 members. In 1695 they built a new place of worship on the Vasteland where it would remain until it was completely destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1940. After the end of WW2 a new Scots Kirk was built and still continues to this day.
