"In the report written by the school [of Mézières] headmaster and kept in the Archives du génie, one can find dated 8 October 1783 the following comments for Rouget de l'Isle:

He did not work more than he was asked to... His conduct has been that of a man always busy with his amusements...his character is sweet and honest, but very inclined to distraction.

Prieur, on the contrary, is judged as follows:

Du Vernois has constantly given proof of his exactitude, of his cleverness, of his good taste and devotion to work and one can affirm that he would have reached one of the first ranks in the graduation scheduled for the next first of January if only his promotion had not been considerably delayed by the two leave of absence that he was obliged to take at the waters of Bourbonne in 1782 and 1783. His manners and conduct have always been irreproachable, he shows much sagacity and rigour; his character is sweet, amiable, affable, honest, made to be liked and very well formed."
