The night was cold and not really dark, just really cold. Most of the other toons on their floor were in bed already, and Tisha was quiet as she finished up her usual night time cleaning routine, shivering as she mopped the last bit of the floor she needed to on that floor. She was cold, yes, but she didn't mind, she could be in her room soon enough she supposed. Though she didn't notice that someone else had noticed, someone that she was close to - despite their massive differences.
"Tisha..? Girl you're shakin, get over here."
"Go away Brusha you're going to get paint on my floor..."
"I just cleaned myself up, girl. Now come here, you're cold." Brusha stated quietly, tapping her foot impatiently as she crossed her arms and stared deep at the tissue box that soon was glaring back at her. Though Tisha soon just dramatically sighed and put her mop in it's bucket and propped it against a wall, then walked right over to the paintbrush toon, not even looking at her as she approached.
"I'm almost done Brusha, I'm fine-"
"You are fine, I know. But we gotta look out for each other, so let me look out for you." Brusha softly replied as she knealt down, letting her soft side show as the two were currently alone together in the far end of the dormitory for the common background characters, a spot nobody would look right now. Tisha smiled at it, enjoying the softness of the other while it lasted, though soon was a blushing disaster as the other forced her into an overly familiar oversized sweater.
Brusha's own sweater.
"Brusha-"
"It's a spare, don't worry about it."
"My cleaning gloves are still on."
"Mhm, and it's now your sweater, deal with it yourself."
Tisha just giggled at that, staying as still as possible as the taller toon gently adjusted her sweater so it fit comfortably and the poor tissue box wasn't suffocated within the oversized turtleneck on accident. Once she was all settled though, Brusha moved away slightly, now just sitting on the floor in front of her. Tisha blinked at her, Brusha squinting back.
"I need to paint you in a sweater."
"Brusha..."
"What? You look adorable, and I want to capture that fluffy, baby look you have like this."
"I'm going to punch your face in." Tisha hissed as she turned away, crossing her arms as she tried to hide her blushing face behind her tissue bangs. Brusha just chuckled at that, bringing out her sketchbook and taking the pencil she always had in her pocket out just to sketch the other being like this.
"Ooooo I'm doing it right noooooow you gotta stop me~"
"Are you serious?!"
"Mmmhm."
"GIMME THAT!" Tisha yelled as her face turned an even darker shade of blue from pure embarrassment, and Brusha just calmly stood up and held it just out of reach from the other, smiling deviously as she did so.
"You love me, I know you do."
"Brusha come on!!"
"You know I'll just draw you again, you know you're my favorite to doodle."
Tisha paused at that, her mouth now open to say something again, but her mind... Blanked. She just stared at the other with wide eyes, her mouth slowly closing as Brusha knealt back down to her level and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
"I..."
"You know I've loved you, right? That... I've been drawing you so much because I admire you, right?"
"...No... I've always thought we were just... Really close friends... I thought Shelly would be the one to like me but... You know..."
"Ran off with Miss Know It All... I know. Though you can't lie, she's been softening up too."
"Like you have been... You seem more comfortable now, I'm proud of you." Tisha softly pointed out, giving in to her own tiredness from cleaning all day and gently leaning against Brusha, who just carefully brushed her bangs out of her face before gently holding her close.
"It's all because of you... Thanks for always being here for me, girl. Lemme be there for you right now, you're sleepy."
"You couldn't mop right even if you tried your best..."
"Bet?"
"Pfft- fine, bet. I'll love to watch you fail."
Brusha just honestly laughed that off as she scooped up the other toon like she was nothing, and after stealing her gloves off her hands, went right over and gently stole her cart of cleaning supplies and casually started cleaning up the last little area for her. Tisha just silently watched, huddled up against the other like a little kid huddled up against their mom, even though they were the same age. She was just short. It was oddly calming though, watching as the usually messy painter with her messy hair and paint stained long sleeve shirt cleaned just for her. Watching her focused gaze as she did her best to thoroughly clean as much as Tisha usually did, watching that content smile form every time she caught onto Tisha staring at her. Maybe... Maybe they really were more than just best friends with opposite hobbies... Maybe they really were each other's safe space after all, their space to just be themselves instead of locking in on meaningless tasks to shut out their real soft feelings inside, their comfort toon who was always right there to make everything feel... Right. Tisha sighed as she closed her eyes, resting her head on the other's shoulder contently. Brusha just chuckled at that, pretending she didn't notice- but they both knew she noticed.
"Brusha..?"
"Yup?"
"I hate you." Tisha whispered teasingly, smiling as she looked up at the other. Brusha stared at her for a moment, then chuckled as she just shook her head.
"Nah, you love me, admit it."
"I would if you kept yourself clean."
"Art is messy!"
"And tissues are clean, dummy."
"I'll always let you clean my room once I'm done painting, you know that."
"...I know... And I love cleaning your room..."
"And I love painting things for you... Even when you do tease me for it." Brusha softly replied, gently putting down the mop again just to give the toon in her arms a loving squeeze. Tisha just hugged her and squeezed her right back, the two smiling like doofuses in the dark area of the dorms, silently accepting their differences and just - existing together. They were definitely close, despite... Their very obvious differences, and they were okay with that.
"I love your stupid face, Tisha."
"I hate you more."
"Nah, you love me."
Tisha sighed at that, fake rolling her eyes as she genuinely smiled wide at the other, finally slightly nodding in agreement.
"I do love you... But I'll always hate your stupid face more, dummy."
I posted a new Gintoki/Katsura fic yesterday over on my Dreamwidth journal: https://rainsometimes.dreamwidth.org/252156.html
It doesn't have a title yet and probably needs a bit more polishing, but I felt I was ready to have other people look at it, if they're willing to in its current rough state. I plan to post it to AO3 later!
