April leaves: Hydrocotyle vulgaris; marsh pennywort, water naval, money plant, lucky plant, copper coin. I brought this plant back to Italy from a Japanese nursery, but it is native to North Africa and Europe, where I have never seen it growing in the wild. A native to the streams and seashores of Japan Farfugium japonicum (leopard plant) is a rhizomatous evergreen perennial with simple, rounded leaves and branched clusters of daisy-like bright yellow flowers in late autumn and early winter. There are several variegated cultivars - plants with golden spotted leaves being Farfugium japonicum ‘Aureomaculatum’ or those with white edged foliage being Farfugium japonicum 'Argenteum’. They have been used in green walls and raised beds in Tokyo, Japan, so bring much needed greenery into the urban environment and a plant reference to the countryside beyond the city.
