#3668 - Farfugium japonicum - Leopard-Plant
Apparently Christchurch is sometimes known as The Garden City, but a lot of the plants in those gardens are introduced from other parts of the world, which to be honest I found a little annoying. On the other hand, some of the plants in the planters in the CBD were at least unfamiliar enough to catch my interest.
Such as this one, AKA tractor seat plant, Ligularia tussilaginea, and tsuwabuki (石蕗) in Japan, where it is native to shores and streams. Farfugium is derived from Latin supposedly meaning "flour that runs away," and refers to the woolly, white, hair-like substance covering the plant’s foliage and stems when young and sheds with age.
Rhizomatous evergreen perennials in the Daisy family. They're also carcinogenic.
Christchurch, NZ.
