Aww, thank you! ❤ Given all the fake outrage in the tags, I figured there should be at least 0.01% positive content on tumblr as well, because I know nothing would make me run faster from a new fandom than people trying to turn negativity into a contest...
ok and one more because i'm greedy but you really don't have to: timeatom, "What happened?" - "Same thing that always happens. You didn’t know me and then you fell in love with me. And now you know me."

??. "What happened?" - "Same thing that always happens. You didn’t know me and then you fell in love with me. And now you know me."
The quiet between them was, for the first time in a long time, fraught with tension. There were words that were going unsaid, and for once Ray could not bring himself to break the silence. He could not even look up at Rip. Instead, his focus was on his hands, as if he could find all the answers he was looking for in the lines of his palms.
His Captain was seated on one of the chairs instead of next to him as was their usual wont. If Ray was looking, he would have realised that Rip was not meeting his gaze either. The elephant in the room needed to be addressed, but neither seemed to want to make the first move.
A part of Ray felt resigned to the conversation that would come, the dissolution of the relationship they had built. The knowledge that, once again, he was not enough for the person he loved to stay with. He shuddered out a breath, and the ragged sound was loud even in the hum of the Waverider's engines.
He missed the way Rip's head turned sharply. Missed the emotions that played with no filter on his face.
He did not miss the footsteps that came his way, or the slow way Rip lowered himself next to Ray, finally.
Still, Ray did not look up. Instead, he closed his eyes, curling his fingers into tight fists. The nails biting into his skin kept him present in the moment, even as he wanted to pretend that this conversation was not going to happen. He was tense and ready to flee, and the silence between them grew.
Calloused fingers carefully reached out to open his hands, and Ray blinked down, confused as Rip stroked at the slight scratch marks already etched on his skin. What was his Captain doing? Why was he being so gentle with him, when he no longer had to?
"What happened?" Rip's voice was soft, and almost hesitant.
Ray swallowed dryly, blinking back the sudden tears gathering at his eyes. His tone was bitter when he responded. "Same thing that always happens. You didn't know me and then you fell in love with me." A pause, and he grew more bitter, trying to pull his hands away from Rip's. "And now you know me."
Rip's hands tightened around his, and he tugged at them until Ray looked up, met Rip's eyes. The emotion in them was not what Ray had been expecting, and his heart stuttered in his chest. His Captain looked worried and sad. There was none of the judgement or censure Ray had been sure was coming.
"I've always known you."
There was nothing Ray could say to that, his body shuddering with another sigh, the force of keeping his sobs at bay. Rip tugged him again, and this time Ray swayed into his Captain's warmth, leaning against him, tucking his head into the crook of Rip's neck. The hug was warm and comforting, and full of a promise that had the tears finally slipping down Ray's cheeks unchecked.
"I know you, Ray Palmer. I see you as you see me. And that is why I love you."
I KNOW!! RAY SMILED LIKE "RIP!!" AND RIP LIFTED HIS HEAD AND HE SMILED THAT TINY RIP HUNTER SMILE BECAUSE GOD?? OF COURSE RAY WOULD WELCOME HIM HOME???? HE CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON RAYMOND PALMER.......
*sheds tear* it’s a pure ship, it really is. Like, Rip is time dad, and Ray is literally time mum packing them lunches. And you know that means that Ray and Gideon team up and are like ‘Rip, you need to eat! No, you can’t just have alcohol, you need real food, yes you do!’
And this reminds me that Ray found Rip’s hidden stash of sugary cereals, he did that!
RIP LITERALLY WOULD NEVER?? like idk if you noticed but whenever hes on the bridge ray is always either right by his side or across him looking him in the eye and its just such a steady presence to rip by now that one morning he'll be like "dr palmer, what do you think of using the time drive's power to track mallus in--" and the fact ray isn't there? to immediately answer and discuss with him???? rip notices IMMEDIATELY... the silence... the lack of an eager conversational partner...
I never did notice that ray is always right there beside him. Ahhhhh!!
But what I did notice was in S3 when Rip came back, Ray was just so happy to see him? Like screw what the other Legends thought, Ray loves Rip!
And Rip went back for Ray (and Sara and Kendra and two years too late, but still!)
(yes, I’m still bitter about the Legends FORGETTING Ray)
There was a glass in his hand, almost forgotten as he gazed absently out of the front screens of the Waverider. Ray was lost in his thoughts, in his memories, and being in his small room had led to a panic attack.
Sitting here, even with the nightmare still swirling through his mind, reminded him that he was not stuck in Darhk's box, at his mercy. Reminded him he was free, was able to leave at any time if he wanted.
Footsteps coming onto the bridge startled him out of his reverie. He glanced up, surprise turning soft with quiet understanding as his eyes met Rip's startled ones. This was not the first time they had been on the bridge at the same time like this, both expecting to be alone but finding the other there.
If there was anyone Ray was okay with seeing him in this position, it was Rip. The other man understood Ray far better than Ray was used to, and he was pretty sure he knew Rip better than the man was comfortable with. But it was okay. The company was nice, even if all they did was sit quietly and exist in the same space.
Ray raised his glass in greeting. A small smirk flit across Rip's face as he raised his full bottle of scotch at Ray in return. The scientist breathed out a laugh, shaking his head. Rip came closer, offering the bottle to Ray for a top up. Ray shifted, making some space for Rip next to him.
The former Time Master hesitated for just a second before settling down next to the scientist. It was quiet, a silence that was comfortable and comforting. The warmth of Rip next to him reminded him that there was someone here with him, that Ray was not alone.
Rip was turning the bottle in his hand, sitting stiffly at first before glancing over at Ray and seeing to come to a decision. He swallowed nervously, and Ray knew that whatever Rip was going to say was going to be more serious than any of the conversations they had before.
"Rip?" He leaned slightly towards the man, resting a hand lightly on his sleeved arm.
He felt more than saw the shudder pass through Rip as he looked down at Ray's hand. "Please." Ray's fingers flexed on Rip's arm, ready to move away, sure that was what he meant. Please don't touch me. Please let go. Instead, Rip's free hand came up to gently cover Ray's hand. "Please don't leave me."
A lump formed in his throat. If only that were a promise he could make. Rip knew, of course Rip knew. But it was different to objectively know that the man you were recruiting was dying than to actually know him as a person and realise his time was running out. To see it happen. I won't. I'll stay with you. The words stuck in his throat. More than anything, he wanted that to be something he could promise.
Instead, all he could do was close his eyes. "I don't want to go." Even in the large emptiness of the bridge, the admission came out as a whisper. For the first time in a long time, Ray felt like he belonged somewhere. With the team, sure. But on the Waverider, with Rip, who understood him without words especially.
"I don't want to go." It was said again, the tears he refused to let fall present in his voice. He kept his eyes closed, taking in strength from having Rip at his side, their hands clasped on Rip's arm, sitting close together in the silence of the Waverider.
But someday Ray would have to, and they both knew that. In this moment, however, they were together and they were safe.
