Aelin gently shook you awake, your sleepy eyes greeted by her gleeful smile.
“Again?” you whispered softly, a smile coming over your own lips. Aelin nodded and put a finger to her lips, those stunning eyes darting to where Rowan was still sound asleep next to you.
You shimmied out of the covers and place your feet on the cold floor, then took Alein’s outstretched hand in your own. You led her to where your slippers had been left, forgotten when Rowan had hauled you over his shoulder to get you into bed instead of reading all night. With your feet covered and a dressing gown slipped over your arms by Aelin, you were ready for your nearly bi-weekly adventure.
Aelin opened the door to your rooms silently, ushering you through before shutting it just as quietly, then returned her hand to your grasp. You began the descent down the stairs, footsteps growing less careful the further you got from Rowan and his ridiculously good hearing.
The kitchens were deserted when you walked through the doors, but only of people. There was a small, painstakingly decorated cake sitting on one of the counters, moonlight from the window shining on it. You nearly giggled at the sight, but held your amusement back as Aelin grabbed two forks from a drawer and passed on to you.
“Orelia outdid herself this time,” Aelin said as she gazed longingly at the cake, not yet ready to destroy its beauty. Tiny azure aster flowers had been piped onto the white buttercream, with ribbons of buttercream circling the top and base of the cake. The details were so pretty, you almost didn’t want to eat it.
Aelin’s fork stabbed into the cake and came away with a large bite, revealing the chocolate center. She let out a pleased moan at the taste, gesturing with her fork for you to take a bite.
It was as delicious as Aelin made it sound, your eyes fluttering shut at the taste.
“It’s good, right? I had Orelia find an old recipe from my childhood. It tastes just like I remember,” Aelin sighed as she went in for another bite. You hummed in agreement, letting your fork sink into the moist cake again.
You made it halfway through the cake before you felt him at the door, a chill wind sweeping in with his worry.
“What are you doing in the kitchens this late at night?” You and Aelin froze over the cake - never before had Rowan caught you in the act of eating a far-too-large dessert in the middle of the night.
You glanced behind you before looking forward again, and your eyes met turquoise and gold just as you both burst out laughing, Rowan’s disapproving tone mixed with his rumpled hair too amusing to ignore.
Rowan sighed and walked closer, clicking his tongue when he saw the cake between the two of you. “You’re eating a whole cake? In the middle of the night? Don’t you know how bad that is for you?” Rowan huffed, deft fingers reaching for your forks.
“Don’t you dare,” Aelin growled at him. “Tonight is dessert night for us, you can go back to bed if you don’t want to participate.” She flashed him a mischievous grin as she reached into the drawer again, pulling out another fork.
Rowan raised an eyebrow when she offered it to him.
“Just think, if you eat some, we’ll eat less cake. Which means we’ll be healthier,” Aelin said, batting her lashes at him. You poked Rowan’s side, pine green eyes fixing on you.
“It’s a recipe from when Aelin was young,” you said softly. You watched as his resolve melted at the mention of Aelin’s past. It might be a little manipulative, but you couldn’t help falling into the game Aelin was playing, as usual.
He narrowed his eyes at both of you before taking the fork and sinking it into the cake, coming away with a small bite of cake. You watched with a grin matching Aelin’s as he ate it, a pleased look on his own face when he tasted the cake.
“Well?” Aelin asked impatiently.
“It’s… good,” Rowan admitted before setting his fork down.
“So you understand why we’re going to finish it.”
“You’ll both be sick!”
“Nuh-uh, we haven’t gotten sick from it before,” you said through a mouthful of cake.
“Before?”
You gave Aelin a sheepish smile, knowing that you’d let the cat out of the bag.
“Yes, buzzard, before. We do this every so often.” Aelin said simply.
“I can’t believe-” Rowan started, then shook his head. “Actually, I can believe that you’d do this, Aelin. But Y/N, I thought you had some self-control.”
“Are you saying I don’t have self-control, love?” Aelin asked, her voice sharp as she aimed the prongs of her fork at Rowan. “I could do this every night, if I felt like it. I would call that self-control,” she huffed.
You giggled at her before lifting a bite to her mouth. “If it makes you feel better, I come along to make sure she doesn’t eat the whole thing. And ‘cause it tastes good.”
Rowan let out a long sigh. “I’ll leave the two of you to it… Do not eat another cake,” he warned. “I’ll be waiting for you in the bedroom, don’t take too long.”
“Oo, Rowan giving up before his job is finished,” Aelin teased, one hand grabbing his arm before he could get out of reach. “Why don’t you stay while we finish, then you can walk us up? Then your buzzardly duties will be fulfilled.”
Rowan considered her words for a moment. “Eat quickly.”
“But that will make us sick,” you pointed out, earning a roll of his eyes. You pulled him in for a kiss, which was really you tugging on his arm until he bent down close enough for you to press your lips to his. “Staying means you get a little sweetness of your own.”
He grunted before capturing your lips in a deeper kiss, and then turned to Aelin. She still had frosting on her lips when he kissed her, a breathy sigh leaving her when they parted. Fizzy sparks of heat went through you at seeing them together, quite possibly your favorite sight in the whole world.
“Bedroom. Now. Bring the cake, Ro,” Aelin demanded, grabbing you by the hand and tugging you off your stool. The two of you ran back to the Queen’s tower, aware of Rowan hot on your heels, hopefully with the rest of the cake in hand.
It seemed that you’d be getting more than just cake tonight.
