My thing with Roxy
While I love Roxy’s general badassery, particularly the level of physical skill and prowess she got to show off at Hoffstedder’s, I also think it’s odd that she was delegated to mostly physical missions and interrogations through out the show when her intro clarifies her to be a grifter, a fixer, and a counterfeiter. Like, that’s why the Matchmaker sent Meyer to her, because he needed a team of diverse skill sets. Joe is the soldier, Lonny is the master (used loosely) of disguise, Harriet is the all around espionage expert, Murray and Mindy know machines and technology, Jonah has a knack for linguistic patterns — and each person has points in the show where those areas come into focus. So why didn’t Roxy get a moment like that? Why was she always the one carrying out the mission and never the one explaining the situation to the others beforehand? I can’t help but think of her race having something to do with it (both on the actual writers’ side in the lack of scenes written to address her skills and in the story where it’s hinted at that Meyer only uses her for her race rather than her expertise).
Looking back, I wonder what connections she has throughout the city, I wonder if she’s the one who makes fake IDs whenever the team needs to break in somewhere, I wonder how she got into counterfeiting, I wonder if grifting is ever harder for her to pull off because society is inherently suspicious of black people, and if that is a testament to the level of skill she has, just like...I love her character, I loved getting to see her daughter and her personal life, but there seemed to be a clear absence of professional characterization that the other Hunters got.
What? You’ve just never talked to me about your daughter. I never wanted too before. HUNTERS (2020-) created by David Weil
