Kincardine Castle
Kincardine Castle is located in Royal Deeside, Scotland. Built by Mary Pickering from 1884-1886, the castle is a mock Victorian country house, built in the Scots Baronial design. The builders incorporated many historical building styles into the castle, with the exception of the numerous large windows and balconies. The castle was used as a hospital during WWI and WWII. After Mary’s death, the castle passed to her daughter Ursula who used it as a vacation home for her family. Ursula’s two daughters used the castle as a party house when they grew older and their mom tried to prevent them from having too many overnight guests by selling the furniture from an entire floor of bedrooms. In 1951, Mary’s youngest daughter Susan moved into the castle with her family. Due to high taxes, and a hike in inflation and interest from 1950-1979, the castle fell into disrepair. Susan’s son Andrew took over the castle in 1979 and eventually moved into the castle with his family. Andrew refurbished his home, adding 14 bathrooms to the castle and renovating the gardens in 1996. The castle sits on 3,000 acres, which includes a walled garden, a planetary garden, and the Laburnum Walk. The castle is exclusive and only available for group dining, events, and weddings. They also provide organized activities for those staying at the hotel. The castle has 16 bedrooms; three have private bathrooms, while the other fourteen have en-suite bathrooms. The castle is not open to the public, but the owners host public events throughout the year.
