ARTS & DESIGN DIGEST #2 : CHARLOTTE PERRIAND
''Everything changes so quickly, and what is state of the art one moment won't be the next. Adaptation has to be ongoing – we have to know and accept this. These are transient times. '' - Charlotte Perriand
Charlotte Perriand was born in 1903 in Paris, France. She was raised in a household of craft, her father being a Tailor and mother a seamstress. She was acknowledged by her professors in high school about her artistic and drawing abilities. In 1920 she attended Ecole de L’union Centrale des Artes Decoratifs’ to study furniture design. In this time she completed many projects such as renovating her own space. In 1981 Perriand released an article describing her vision for her work and life stating "The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living—living in harmony with man's deepest drives and with his adopted or fabricated environment." She had a philosophy of connecting to the space around you and believing that better design was the key to a better society. After completing her studies and exhibiting for her school, she applied to partner with renowned designer Le Corbusier aka Charles-Édouard Jeanneret and got rejected. Le Corbusier visited one of her exhibitions and decided to accept her in and continue to work for him for a decade. In the time working with le corbusier she utilized any materials such as steel and wood, aiming to make her designs accessible and affordable. She designed in 1928 the iconic B306 Chaise lounge as well as the LC Grand Confort Chair that was accredited to le corbusier himself. She later on decided to leave Le Corbusier and embark on leading her own career.
When Germany was occupying Paris during the war, she set off to Japan to work for the Japanese government as an adviser, encouraging them to raise their standards on design within the industry of developing products for the west. On her return to Europe, she was Exiled to Vietnam due to the war, and in that time she took it as an opportunity to learn traditional woodwork and weaving to further her practice.
She returned to Europe with her newly acquired skills and designed various works such as Les Arcs in 1960, which was inspired by the new idea of travel and leisure, in the setting of the French Alps, naturally blending in and flowing around the native environment with a modern influence. The large ski resort consists of hundreds of rooms perfectly stacked in primary colors with a slight brutalist touch. She also completed other notable works such as Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation, designed 1948–50. She passed away in 1999.
