Real Person #65: Ashley

Age: 22 Location: USA First started having symptoms of OCD: When I was around 9 years old. First realized I had OCD: 19. Some of your common obsessions: I’m afraid I will hurt myself, having my dogs harmed in any way, afraid someone will break in, worrying about bacteria. Some of your common compulsions: Checking/tapping door, washing hands, mental checking/repeating, checking my car, I do a lot of checking and repeating. How I’m being treated: Therapy. (3+ years) Things that make me feel better: Fidget toys, good music, and my dogs. My current dream: Become a dog trainer and live without constant anxiety. One piece of advice that’s stuck with me: Challenging OCD means accepting a risky life. I’m learning that challenging my OCD means accepting the ideas that terrify me, allowing myself to humour them, think about them, and let go of some of the control. I’m trying so hard because it has to matter, things have to change.
