field notes & cell snaps, 27 july 2026: the two seal pup braddahs from different maddahs were sleeping together 🥰 saw my boy rq78 who’s now 4 years old, hooray! 🥳 couldn’t resist a snap of this male honu. he was hugging the dune right at the waterline

my rq78 wall in my bedroom. first as pup & then 3 yo. now i get to add his 4 yo pic. it’s so amazing to get to watch individual wild animals through the years. i guess that’s the benefit of such a small population (only 50ish regular seals around kauai) 🦭🏝️

when i didn’t see rq year 2, i wondered. only 50% of hawaiian monk seal pups make it to adulthood (5-6 yo). always crossing flippers here & hoping for the best 💫
