A flash of anger sparked in dark eyes, before the man sighed with his entire body, lips turned into a grimace. “What’s that going to do? It’s not going to fix my current situation. You donn’t have to trust me, you don’t have to believe me, but you do not get to pry into my life. Let me get back on my feet, and hell, maybe I’ll give your brother a den den mushi, or a Vivre Card, and call in my favor later.”
Ace let the words roll in his head, tasting the tired truth in them. “You need my brother alive.” To save you, to rescue you.
“Truly you are a genius without parallel. Are you done questioning me?”
Rescue him… from what?
“You’re not off the hook.” Ace declared. “But… I’ll believe you. For now.”
“Fantastic,” Crocodile said, sarcasm dripping off his voice like venom. “Better put that pretty head of yours to work on how we’re going to be leaving this island. We’ve been lucky so far, but my sand couldn’t have taken us that far away from Marineford. It’s only a matter of time before those dogs from the marines come after us.”
“What, you can’t come up with a plan by yourself?”
“Keep this up and what I’ll be planning is your murder.”
“I’d like to see you try.”
“Hmm?” A sleepy voice cut through their snarling standoff, Luffy rubbing his eyes and smiling as he saw Ace. “What are you guys talking about?”
“Luffy! You’re awake!” His brother eased him up, letting him lean heavily against him as he placed a hand against his forehead. “Your temperature’s gone down, how are you feeling?”
“Hungry!” Luffy exclaimed cheerfully, as if he hadn’t been putting back an ungodly amount of meat these past days.

An Au I've been idly working on where Crocodile rescues Ace and Luffy and suffers the consequences (their friendship). Currently 5k but maybe don't expect it anytime soon because I don't know where it's going
