#OTD: Ruby Bridges Makes History A small step for a little girl, a great step for Civil Rights By Miriam Kleiman, Public Affairs

On November 14, 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges changed history when she walked into William Franz Public School in New Orleans following the court-ordered desegregation of New Orleans schools. 

Fifty years later, President Obama welcomed her to the White House to see Norman Rockwell’s painting of her historic first day. "The Problem We All Live With” (1963) was displayed in the West Wing in summer 2011. Ruby Bridges, Sixty-Two Years Later

Ruby Bridges was six years old in November 1960, when she broke racial segregation in Louisiana's public school system.

She was flanked by armed United States Marshals, to protect her from local protestors.

A child should not have to be a foot soldier against hate.  Yet, she was neither the first, nor the last.

It feels like the events of another age.  But Ruby Bridges is still alive and fighting for her convictions, as are some of the parents who railed against her.

The struggle is far from over.

On this day in 1960, #RubyBridges became the first African American child to integrate an all-white public elementary school in the South. Six-year-old Bridges was escorted to William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans by federal marshals while violent mobs raged outside. Bridges' bravery and story helped to galvanize the #CivilRightsMovement and the fight for equal rights.
