The Ruby Valley, Nevada. There’s the Lonliest road in America, and then there’s this road, which becomes unpaved for 90 miles, and has almost no one on it. There is no cell service, no gas stations, and the road gets worse and worse as you go on. This is a dirt road off US50, “The Lonliest Road in America.” I drove down this for two hours, and as it got worse, and all the buildings became a distant memory, I started to wonder what would happen if my tire blew. After two hours, I turned around, panicked, and headed back. This is a real time in my life I though I was risking my life. I never saw another car. Never. This is the desert. I will forever remember the true level of solitude I felt here, and how weird it was to be so isolated when I could see miles in every direction. When things get bad in my life, I now remember this road, and wish I could be here, miles away from any problem except the fear of being stranded. I always kept a full tank of gas, but as I doubled back, there became real concern if I would run out of gas before I reached a gas station. I made it.
