Manhattan, Kansas. April2015, NY to Denver. — the second best cup of coffee I had in my life was in this small college town. Sparrow Coffee, which got its beans from a toaster out of Kansas City. It was an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, which always goes well for me. My uncle and I camped in the campground at the foot of this dam, in a tent. Overnight, we heard some of the most violent thunderstorms of my life, and I honestly feared a tornado might be close by. Kansas City, MO — NY to Denver, April 2015. Kansas City was a real surprise, and is a beautiful town. There are two sides: the rich, Missouri Side, and the poorer Kansas Side (which was tougher around the edges, but WAY more beautiful). I hope to get back there to photograph the Rail Yards, which were massive. Hard to believe that when they announced the 14th St Busway back on October 2nd that all streets would look like 14th street six months later. This was the press conference, 2 blocks from my office. This change completely made the area a delight, very livable. We all hoped they would enact this on some more major streets. Now they all seem to be (most days), and this city has become so much more livable when I do go out on foot, or on bike. Let’s remember what normal was like. Coming back from a vacation (this is last Sept) is like remembering what your normal life was like. In this case, I had been on the road for two weeks, across some lonely, solitary spaces. So coming back to (what was) our normal life was refreshingly strange and delightful to me. Someone, in a love letter to New York in 1947, once said: “New York isn’t always great to live in, but it’s always a wonderful place to return to.” I heart you NY. Redeye Arrivals, JFK, TWA Terminal — the end of my September 2019 travel. Red eyes are painful. Even when you get sleep, you wake up on a plane, stiff, uncaffeinated, in a sea of people. So when I walked into the TWA Lobby, somewhere I had been many times, I felt a warm welcome. I experienced not only architectural beauty, but natural beauty from the morning suns warmth. Period music filled the air, and once I found that cool VW Bug coffee cart, all the mystery of a red eye, of not being in California, not being in the beauty of nature, all of it, melted away. Why don’t we do this anymore? We need to invest in architecture like this on a larger level, because it makes a difference. It matters. Don’t just make it convenient.
