rugby au musings

something about me: I LOVE sports au, especially when I haven’t played in 10 years lol

the commanders!! (Non exhaustive list) (more squads under the cut!)

Cody: scrum half (domineering and in the thick of things, of course - he would be one of those scrum halves that basically captain it all)

Fox: fly half (much like the above, except he truly is everywhere at once running the show. *never* on the same team as Cody; if on a Corries only team, then Stone is his scrum half)

Thire, Ponds and I’m chucking Bly in this one because of his canon scope visor: fullbacks all the way! Deep in the back, the Hail Mary of defense, patron catchers of long drop kicks, and drop kickers in turn - can get dirty by running to the backs to create a defense line

Thorn: the dude with the canonical wings MUST be a winger, he might be a canon heavy gunner but this dude yearns to fly across the pitch and deliver all the schemes that Fox lil dastardly fly half heart can think of. And Doom would be a winger too - just on vibes!!!

Wolffe: epitome of the 8th, this guy controls the scrum from the back, knows where the ball is - I would say Comet and Sinker are flankers much for this reason.

Neyo: I am tempted to put him as n 8 as well except he’s canonically a mean sonova trained by death watch and whose battalion is Urban Guerrilla All Day All The Time, so I think he’s going to be right there in the scrum, Hooker with the fastest foot in the galaxy (the need to get the ball from the other’s side hooker and nudge it to the second row/n 8)

Colt, Bacara: they feel like props (first row scrum) to me, but they also have such second row/wingers vibes. at this point could be either forwards or backs - it really depends on the body type!

if torrent was a whole team:

Rex: imma gonna put my full face paint for this one 🤡 and say that Rex is a fly half like Owen Farrell was during the last World Cup. Rex secret weapon is a deadly drop kick.

Fives: I’m incredibly torn on this one because I feel like him and Echo would be stunning scrum halves! I’m going to go with scrum half for Fives and flanker for Echo, but they’re the kind of players that truly can be everywhere at once.

Kix: fullback 5ever, this dude is seeing the bigger picture, he’s got your back, he’s your last chance, and he gets underestimated at everyone’s peril

Jesse: another mr n 8!!! It’s all fun and games until that ball rolls his way and then he and and Echo and Fives get in the flow, that ball moves of independent will!

Hardcase: hooker! In the thick of things, he would get a massive kick out of the position name alone, and he would get to wreck havoc!! His tackles are intense!

Dogma… him I was thinking second row (the dudes that get flown in the hair during line outs (the side ball thing)) but he and Tup would be such a wings combo!!! Dudes can run!! and Dogma would be such a fastidious tackler, he would know all the Rules (rugby rules have the capital R), he would tiptoe just the line to not get carded!

Dominoes <3: Hevy is a prop (next to Hardcase! What a duo!!!); Cutup is with Kix with the backs, and Droidbait Is Second Row (behind Jesse and in front of Jesse!)

I used to play too!! Bless you man, I was a very proud second row and I loved it.But then I sprained my ankle, and I was out for 6 months, and then brexit happened and some of my teammates voted to get out - IDEK, I wasn’t into risking neck for that team anymore.

Ok, back to shipping: so me and the GF ( @smellslikespringspirit​) somehow ended up shipping owen with jules (plisson.) in a really blonde ship (so much blonde everywhere) so fordy had go somewhere and we thought a pairing with hugo (bonneval) would be hilarious because fordy is practical and (it was 2014) bursting at the damn seams with the need to play for england, and hugo just looks like that crazy guy that would wear tropical shirts at galas because he can. (he so can.)

things then became AUs of AUs (because i’m a child and i need to have all the flavours of the ice cream and all the damn AUs) so fordy ended up with owen because i FUCKING LOVE the childhood friends to lovers trope. sue me. actually no i don’t have the money for that but YES. In my mind this ship name is The Classic, because, well, it is. i mean, fordy used to help owen with his homeworks so they could train more. how rugby nerd is that??? also, younger fordy playing a year above, and generally just not so friendly competition and two northerns whose fathers were league players being surrounded by posh young union players. yes.

so obviously things got out of hand (because with me they do) and i really like owen with jules (cultural differences? linguistic differences? emotional constipation vs good at communicating? YES) and i really REALLY like the idea of twins, that i made owen a twin: david. (not sure where i got the name from but it had a whole though process behind it) and yeah, david is like owen’s twin except while owen stopped playing league when his father got serious with the sarries/the south, david decided to stick it out and keep on playing. except he’s an overachiever so he had to go all the way to australia (seriously, australia is macho, league is macho, it was a match in hell) and become what his brother is for league. obviously david is not a kicker: he’s a tackler and he smiles a lot and he’s very bisexual and he plays a lot with people expectations because he’s more reckless and lonelier that his brother, on the other side of the world with no family and i’m not going to tell you the long version of this, but he converts to union (rugby is ridiculous) and goes back to uk except owen has issues so he accepts bath’s offer instead. hijinks and adventures ensue until everybody is happy again because it’s my AU and I fucking can.

Very Notable Mentions: Fordy is demisexual if not even further down the aro spectrum (he fluctuates like I do, and this is why you don’t start empathizing with a character, people) so my headcanon is that he has had Few and Far Between romantic entanglements. Childhood crush on Owen (or david, depending) aside, @knockmeforsix tells the story of when he and Niall (morris) were still at the Tigers and had the cutest and angstiest smut scene ever. She’s an amazing writer so do ask her if you want to read that. Anyway, now Morris is taking the longest world trip ever (in RL) and i can’t stop imagining them randomly chatting on instagram (whattsapp is too personal, facebook too corny, and fordy likes the pictures) and Niall imparting wisdom in the face of feelings. (fordy hates feelings.)

Ok, so, it’s horribly early on a Monday train so…!

This being said, Watson plays piano and he and his brother use to play four hands during holidays from boarding school. (England is weird.) mostly because watts needled and bothered his brother until he caved in and they’re actually quite good - except when Watson tries to cover the weeknd.

And since I’m on a Bath kick, nick (who in real life is probably a dick whatever) has been trained to sing classically - look at his chest, I mean - just to escape math hour, and has been listening to the Hamilton Mixtape on repeat (he can /nail/ satisfied, ok)

Hidalgo-something Scottish is a human espresso. I mean, Scottish players are much of the mastiff beaten-by-life-but-not-surrendering but this one took to the bitterness like a duck to water (he’s half Spanish. He’s allowed to angst.) he’s one of the only three backs the forwards have sworn their life to. Snark for days (but volunteers for pets charities).

Just to make you understand how my headcanons should not be applied to real life people but to their 2D counterparts, half of the team can see with their little eye that Manu and Goode always end up talking in corners. And have entire sassy comeback sessions in the way they gesticolate across the room whenever people separate them after matches (sarries being a pack culture actively surveilled by the vets). Incidentally Manu doesn’t have fucks to give and his whole family is open supportive of their sister, and Alex is English and deadpan, so it’s a star crossed thing I’m telling you.

As anyone who has been on my blog for more than 5 minutes? During the RWC? I don’t like England (too many sexual assault cases pending TBH) BUT the young guard is killing me with the cute. Especially by having two fly halves on the pitch (yeah, Farrell’s 12 is a physical 10. I fucking love it) that have been playing together since childhood yadda yadda - Owen talks rarely, but he’s 100% about training people for kicking. Sexton and Halfpenny were quite the mentors during his lions, and he knows the only way is to pay it forward to whoever wants to try and might be struggling - reason why he and Fordy are constantly in front of one of the posts at impossible angles.

And fordy 1) hates long pants 2) is really good at yoga (‘core?’ 'no, yoga’).

Switching to the Welsh, Hallam never properly learnt it (besides school basics) while Morgan speaks with his family’s cadence, and teaches him. North is vaguely traumatised when he makes the mistake to listen in to them ('they were blushing and giggling warby!!!’) but also finds them cute. This being said, north’s Lola (she’s a basset-hound! 😍) is like, amazing and will look at you with gentle canine understanding eyes if you’re sad. George will drop it on your lap when he thinks you need her. Warburton gets a hug and a 'you’re enough, you’re a great captain’. (Seriously, he’s been shoehorned in the role since he started playing and he’s like 'why me’).

And I think it’s enough???? I’m missing the Irish, I know, but that’s because I don’t know them very well but they all seem nice tweens with a really thick accent?

From the endless plot details about the twins AU that will never coalesce into a damned plot: David is voted most likely to randomly half dance when he's listening to music - he's been stuck in a 24k Magic loop and he and Watson have a really complicated set of steps ('it's a dance routine' 'nope, that would imply we actually know how to dance') and George is not at all endeared, or dragged into this one evening after a pint too many

This got very long! So shippy! Very O/F oriented! With a side of random!

Yes!!! Tiny fordy sandwiched during the anthem between his d-men/friends!!!And obviously hockey has the traditional ‘Imma gonna drop those gloves now’ but also like, I feel like Owen and fordy would be so cold and analytical about it? Like, let’s think about their teammates: machenaud only loses it at the end of the matches, but tries not to; Jules gets riled up on others behalf every once in a while, and he does try to take his cues from the others but it’s hard sometimes; Hugo talks shit and gets shit and he’s delighted about it; newbie goalie Hallam Amos can’t lose it, so he just doesn’t; etc etc (I’m thinking JJ and Watson are in there, the former is from Detroit and the latter from Washington DC and somehow they get along like a house on fire); but Owen talks back when needed, is sneaky in his revenges on the ice, and rarely has to apply a good body check to put fear into the other team - and fordy just takes careful notes of everything shot his way, and doesn’t forget nor forgive: he’ll win most games and then, during the handshake, will have a mean comeback at the ready. And people wonder why the other team blanches sometimes. As a side note, both of them are aware of what a good fight makes for morale, so they’ll just let the others know and what has to happen, will. (E.g: Jules sin binned, Hugo is cresting the wave of 'oh no they didn’t’, wham, bam, bonneval’s goal with assist from ford)

However outside the game, they are ok people, you know? Maybe O would be a business manager major, fordy a psychology one, Hugo would be something like history with a focus on napoleon selling Louisiana to the US, Watson deep maths, Jules sports science…

And random, Owen has a slow 'yeah, eh?’ Souther that hits fordy right in the knees. That and the fact that Owen is so level headed. Like, true realist, but not mean about it? Practical. Fordy doesn’t know how to feel cold anymore (winter wind coming from the lake in Chicago?), so he’s 80% in shorts and snapbacks, (Owen shouldn’t be affected. He is. He’s torn between swaddling him in blankets and enjoying the view) and bottles stuff up and he talks himself into the gruelling routine that is hockey - and they both try to avoid the consequences of having two ex-players as fathers. But like, Owen remembers when it went from being a messed up little income family to his father captaining the Stars, while fordy was born into that, and gossip has it he and his father have not the best relationship, and it has something to do with fordy transferring college last minute, from the one his father is coaching to anywhere but there.

Owen and Jules would so bond over the damn cold of playing for eastern Ivy League universities, and tipping each other on the best winter warmers - also gossip has it they both love pumpkin spice latte and will likely kill to be the first in the queue every fall. And Jules is just so relaxing and empathic with people? Charming player with a rolling R and yet he winds down the crazy alpha teammates very efficiently, and, and: he’s a hugger, OK? He’ll hug you and look at you with those baby blue eyes and angelic face and tell you that everything is going to be ok.

Somehow I feel like fordy would lobby to have Uma Thurman as the team scoring song, but he’d get vetoed. Thing is, fordy pouts. Almost as well as Jules ('no Hugo, you’re not allowed to pout’), and Owen is like 'oh no’.The song ends up being something like 'timber’ by pitbull/kesha, but still, no one misses The Glances. Now, something that I didn’t mention before is that fordy is very much ok with letting his preference for men show: it just… Happens. Like, first social of the year after dinner at the coach house and they all move to bar nearby and he lets himself be flirted with. And when one of the seniors tries to muddle things, he’s just like 'what, like it’s weird?’ (Fordy loves to paraphrase legally blonde. He’s not going to law school because he’s already juggling hockey, but he’d be there, if not) Jules fist bumps because he’s as bi as they come (erm, this sounds filthy) and Hugo is ace, and since they’re all the coach’s pets project no one says anything (especially to max’s face. He’s that kind of captain that doesn’t let this shit in the team) Meanwhile there Owen is a corner taking the measures of this new guy and he _wishes_ he could grow such a pair of balls. I mean, people do think something is up because you’d never see him with anyone, ('Owen? Hooking up? Nope’ confirms JJ) but yes, fast forward to him finally offering a drink to a male puck bunny from the rival team. (Watson discreetly closes Hugo’s mouth. Jules is hugging very very tight fordy.)('he’s likes men!’ 'Yes?’ 'I thought it was just us!’ 'That’s because you play too much’) After that a ball of sticky feelings and careful moves might get rolling between them.

Aaaaahhhhhhh I’m so dry, this is the second time a kind anonymous sends me this!!!

I’ve had a really bad couple of days at work, TMI re: my anxiety to my colleague and my boss’ boss (everyone is really kind about it and they all have praises for me but you know #impostersyndrome)

ANYWAY.

I’m in the states, so you know what?! You get a US edition of rugby headcanons!!!

Namely, an AU where Owen is from the south, fordy is from Chicago (and running from it) and Jules is that québécois blonde that got transplanted in California. Somehow they all end up in a Ivy League (Stanford? Boston?) university with an Ice Hockey scholarship. they all worked their assess off for it, but for different reasons: Owen needs to make a decision regarding his coming out and no way it’s happening in Dallas, fordy was born in the wrong state, and Jules is in it for the smell of synthetic ice and the fact that he got too big for artistic Ice stuff.

So obviously Jules is like, the blonde chill guys that hits it off with wild Florida freshman Hugo, and there’s the other captain québécois Machenaud that will drag this team to the frozen four yes or yes, and Owen is a big hit with the latter because he’s scary good, and usually just scary, but also it takes new frosh fordy (following year) to bring out the kind from the awkward. And I don’t know if you want David in this au or not, but the roles are as follows: Owen is a d man with forward duties, fordy is flat out forward and is keeping Machenaud on his toes regarding captaincy, and Jules is the d man body check you so didn’t see coming.

And argh, I hit 'publish' before I was done but yes, those three somehow link and end up being in the same line more time than not, and they already have pretty bubble butts but can you imagine as hockey players?!?!? And like the image of fordy and Owen as Alternating captains, and, IDEK, anthem time before the match, fordy between those bigger two guys?(Sounds like ot3, ops) And, omg, college life!!! And what would they even major in?!Too tired for this now, but feel free to let me know and we can continue on this!!!
