Katniss sang “All the songs you used to sing to me. Would rock birds to sleep. I need you now so please somehow….Saw that dark cloud coming from a million miles away. Oh, how I've dreaded this God forsaken day …” the song her daddy taught her. Her voice cracked and tears spilled down her face.

She needed her daddy today, she needed her sister, she needed the people she’d lost in the war. Part of her wanted to forget, erase the past. But she couldn’t forget, their ghosts were with her. Katniss began to hyperventilate as she felt her baby kick and move within her belly.

She waddled as quickly as she could to the nearest closet shutting the door with a loud thud. The music replayed in her head again. “Mama's been crying in the kitchen. Sister's been afraid of the dark. I've been gathering the pieces of all these shattered hearts. And I don't care where you go to…And I don't care where you land. Just get out of there daddy as fast as you can,” Katniss rocked back and forth, whispering “Just get out of there daddy as fast as you can,” over and over again.

Her baby moved once more, and she placed her hands on her womb terrified she was doing some sort of damage. “It’s okay daddy’s coming, he’s coming I swear. He’ll make it all better.”

“Katniss?”

Hearing Peeta’s voice through the door was like a cool breeze on a hot day. “Peeta,” she cried.

The door to the closet opened. Katniss was trying to get up but couldn’t, her belly was in the way. She felt his strong warm arms reach out and easily carry her. She placed her tear stained face in the crook of his neck and took a deep breath. The moment his cinnamon scented penetrated her body, her trembling stopped.

Peeta carried them to the bed, she crawled onto his lapped, hiccupping several times as she listened to his voice, tell her that everything was going to be okay. That he was here, that he wasn’t going anywhere. “Remember the good things Katniss, remember the good things.”

Katniss closed her eyes and forced her brain to remember their first tentative kiss after he came back to her. The way Peeta smiled at her. The way her hands felt inside of his. The first time they’d made love. The sound of his beating heart. Their toasting. The cheese-buns. The laughter they’d shared. How he’d chased her last summer around the yard with the water hose. The moment they decided they were both well enough to have a baby. The moment she found out she was pregnant.

Her silver eyes fluttered opened to meet his hopeful blue one. Peeta was right, as long as they had each other they would be safe. Daddy had come back home.
