1/26/2019 3.56 miles/5.73 kilometers Cold! YTD: 78.85 miles 26 days in a row
So it was pretty cold out. I didn’t pay attention to what the wind chill was, frankly because I didn’t have any exposed skin and I was wearing enough layers that I doubt any wind could’ve gotten to me. But the air temperature was reported to be -6°f/-21°C and that was cold enough.
I wore my Inov-8 ice spikes (I forget the model name) - my second time wearing them, so I was apprehensive about getting too many miles in. I had on my medium-weigh Injinji socks with some HEAVY L.L. Bean socks over those. 2XU compression tights under my heavy neoprene running tights. Thin wool short sleeve, thin wool long sleeve, two medium weight wool tops. Running mittems w/ Hot Hands™. Microfleece balaclava. Underarmour beanie on top of that. And for their debut run (even though I bought them last winter), a pair of Zionor ski goggles.
For the first half mile I thought my legs and upper body were going to be a bit chilly, but I kept moving and I eventually warmed up. Then I started feeling the firmer shoe against my ankle, but kept moving. I was headed for my 9 mile route, but then after maybe 2ish miles I started having a bit of sweat on the inside of my ski goggles. I diverted my path in case the sweat got worse I could head more in the direction of home. And it’s a good thing too - after another half mile the entire left side had a layer of sweat that I couldn’t see through - I had a tiny bit of a clear view in front of my right eye that managed to stay clear to the end of my run. I don’t think I’ll use them again - I also couldn’t see down to where I was planting my feet unless I tilted my head forward. That may be the cause behind the back of my neck getting sore.
I’m still amazed at how warm the ice spikes are - after my run my toes weren’t cold at all. And they really came in handy because there was a LOT of questionable footing.
Taekwondo afterwards. Lots of long-length-of-the-dojang drills, followed by “paddle sparring” until the end of class. Good times.
