Game 79: Sonic Forces: Speed Battle July2024 Speed Battle? More like AD BATTLE. I know it's a free game, but the amount of ads you have to sit through or dodge and weave to get anything done just drags this game down so much. And like? Sonic Forces: Speed Battle isn't like a great game to began with. It's a mildly enjoyable gacha game that works akin to Sonic Dash, just that it's, OOPS ALL MULTIPLAYER. Which isn't particularly a bad thing, but it does make the ad to play time ratio incredibly out of wack to the point that the game is more ad than game.
Is there a good game beneath all the ads and wait time? Ya, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle is a fairly misunderstood game that has good fundamentals apart of it, but I really don't think it works as a standalone title. Attaching it to Sonic Forces or Sonic Dash would have been the better move here and given more reason to play those respective games. The level design is fairly straight forward yet challenging to go against other players. The way each character has different stats and abilities gives players a little agency to the point they can play their favorite characters while still giving variety to each race due to the wide selection of them. For the most part, characters seemed pretty balanced and worked in favor of skill rather than who had the most time or best character to win. The actual levels themselves feel more like reskins rather than whole new levels as the tracks themselves are fairly linear and don't add much to any one given area. Don't get it twisted though as the levels being more formatted to be closer to each other helps pick up the game easier and let's player vs. player skills to be more of the deciding factor. On top of that each level looks nice ascetically and provides it's own unique track to help differ itself.
The main crux to your enjoyment to Sonic Forces: Speed Battle is literally just how much patience or money do you have? While I don't think this gacha is particularly worth either, I'm sure there are plenty of Sonic fans out there that are willing to give this the time of day. Ya, you will have to wait long, and it's far too expensive for what it offers, but the actual game itself is more than playable. Forces Speed Battle really should have been more of a piggyback mode to entice players, but as a game that it is now, I'm sure some will look back on it and enjoy it.
Planet Diver Review
A sarcastic, stylish runner game that looks like a shoot-em-up or bullet hell but is neither. The scanline look is optional. A lot of features are gated behind earning currency as part of the arcade look and feel, but this also includes some powerups I would have found helpful as assists. As it is, the main thing I need is absent, which is simply to reduce the game's overall speed. Forget going 3x (much less the 4x upgrade), the base speed is frequently too fast for me. There's a minor assist in that if you fail three times in a row on a level, the game will offer you an upgrade temporarily. This can also be purchased in game and applied to your character, but it's not a panacea - ultimately I couldn't even complete world 1 even with this help. I did enjoy trying, though. One less game from the Itch Racial Justice bundle in my backlog, too!
