It is a huge conflict of interest because the head of the USDA is typically a former CEO of an agricultural company. Money and power.
It's not just that - it's the mere fact that USDA is looking after the interests of farmers and agricultural companies, not the average person. Which explains why things such as wheat, potatoes and corn are the base of the food pyramid - simply because the USA is among the largest producers of those and it's in the interest of the agricultural companies that this production is been sold. Nobody seems to care how and why though, which amazes me.

I guess you're right. I am just surprised everyone seems to accept this so easily. Me, I wouldn't want companies to push what goes into my child's plate (not that I have one yet, but still) and I'd do anything possible to not let that happen.
