MORPHOLOGICAL AND MERISTIC STUDY FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF Rhinomugil corsula, (HAMILTON -BUCHANON, 1822), RECORDED FROM RUPNARAYAN RIVER, WEST BENGAL, INDIA | UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY
Rhinomugil is a monospecific genus that includes mullets and is found in tropical and subtropical marine water bodies all over the world. They can be found not just in coastal water, but also in brackish water and even freshwater riverine systems. The Rupnarayan River runs for 80 kilometres in West Bengal, from Bandar Ghat [22.67°N, 87.77°E], Paschim Midnapore district, to Gadiara [22.22°N, 88.04°E], Howrah district. This riverine water body is naturally separated into two regions: upstream, with less tidal action and lower salty levels, and downstream, with higher tidal activity and higher saline levels. Pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon surveys were undertaken from February 2018 to February 2020. Specimens were gathered using conventional fishing techniques used by local fishermen. The specimens were identified using existing literature, and measurements were taken in the metric system to one decimal point. The current study is a survey work on the fish faunal diversity of the Rupnarayan River, and it reveals that Rhinomugil corsula is the first time it has been reported from the river, and its distribution is being extended upstream, where the tidal flow in the freshwater region of the river is less influenced.
