people always underestimate the things that they’re willing to do when they’re hungry. they like to forget that starvation is a kind of insanity in itself, a gnawing and unrelenting pain that seems set to devour you from the inside out. it makes you reckless; bold and fearless in the face of danger so long as you have the promise of food as a reward. magda never thought that she’d want to risk life and limb for a potato. never thought that a ration packet, could be worth sneaking right back into hell either - but there she is, a skeleton daubed in tattered stripes, lingering on the outskirts of the american encampment, and already entertaining delusions of suicidal grandeur in pursuit of edible sustenance.
she doubts max would approve; but it’s her turn to keep them fed - and if she doesn’t tell him, he’ll never be the wiser. well, not unless she gets shot and he has to starve, but it’s a conscious decision to ignore this fact, a mechanism of self-preservation as strong as the twisting ache of hunger within her gut. there’s no place for pessimism in this endeavour. it’s all or nothing and she is determined to succeed.
