     contrary to what he thinks ryland must believe, adrian had not actually left his sweater at his apartment on purpose. in fact, he’d been putting off getting it back ever since he’d realized where he’d left it until that text from ryland came along, asking--no, telling--him to retrieve it. inherent in that was the inevitable but unspoken or i’ll throw it out. and adrian knew he would, too. maybe he’d even get a sick kind of pleasure out of doing it. he pauses just before his fist strikes the door of ryland’s penthouse suite and for one horrible moment he thinks maybe it would be better to just let him throw it out. he quickly rids himself of that cowardly thought, though. he knocks three times and forces himself to stop fidgeting the instant the door opens. “well?” he presses, skipping pleasantries and adopting a chilly demeanor to mask the way he actually feels, which is an unpleasant combination of furious, embarrassed, and longing. “where is it? or was this just a booty call?”

worst heartbreak?
