The government maintains strict control over firearms, much like many socialist and communist regimes. Firearms represent a significant source of power, and at this moment, the Iranian people—who have bravely protested for their freedom—are facing immense challenges as largely unarmed civilians against a regime responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of their fellow citizens in recent months.
While discussions about mass shootings in our country are important, they often overlook the far-reaching violence that can be inflicted by a corrupt government. This is precisely why our Founding Fathers emphasized the right to bear arms—not for hunting, but for the protection of individuals and the nation itself. Historical context underscores this point; during the rise of the Soviet Union, an estimated 60 million people lost their lives at the hands of Communist leaders. In China, the figure reached around 70 million due to purges, and in Cambodia, two million lives were claimed—about a quarter of the population at that time.
When I hear arguments about gun control, particularly from those who may not grasp these historical realities, I find it crucial to remind ourselves that firearms can indeed save lives.
