a/n - sorry this and other quarry requests took so long :( things have been very hectic with me recently.

Ryan is a tough man to crack. You’ve learned to interpret his emotions through the numerous hours you’ve spent with him, allowing yourself to feel comfortable in your guesses. In time, you’ve learned that he’s a bit predictable. He has never once proved you wrong.

You know Ryan. You know that when he narrows his eyes just the slightest bit, he’s silently calling you out on your bullshit. When he brushes something off and immediately starts a different conversation, that something bothered him. You also know that he’s definitely not in love with you.

Nothing he has ever done could make you think he likes you in that way. It hurts, though. Of course it hurts. You’re so in love with him your heart aches when he’s not looking in your direction. You know it’s going to hurt far worse when summer ends, so you need to nip it in the bud. You can’t let your feelings ruin what’s left of your independence.

Whenever he tries to speak to you, which you notice is quite often compared to the other counselors, you find a reason to leave. It’s always “I have to do something” or “I think one of the kids needs me”, and frankly, it’s making Ryan suspicious. You can see it in the way he offhandedly questions you. He’s going to figure it out eventually. That eventually won’t matter when summer’s over, though, so you continue what you’re doing with a heavy heart.

“Yeah, okay, I’m not stupid. What’s going on?” Ryan questions. He’s managed to catch you off guard. You were relaxing near the campfire after dealing with your campers before he walked up and sat a comfortable distance away from you.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You say, voice soft against the sound of crickets. You look around for an opportunity to escape.

“Uh… the whole ‘not talking to me’ thing? Look, if it’s something I did, just tell me.”

You’re quiet for a moment. “It’s not your fault. I’m just being stupid.”

Ryan lets out a breath, and you turn to stare at him. He looks utterly conflicted. There’s some sort of mental battle going on inside his mind, and in the process of fighting it, he rubs his hair like a dog trying to pet itself.

When he finally speaks, the whole world seems to quiet, allowing his voice to be the only thing you register. “I think you’re really nice. And I like you. I don’t know what happened between us, but I don’t want to leave it like this.”

You feel prickly tears welling up in your eyes. “I like you too. That’s the problem,” you say bitterly. “I’m afraid that you don’t like me in the same way I like you. I want… I want to be more than friends.” That last sentence is hard to choke out. The lump in your throat is tightening your words to the point of almost-unintelligibility.

He stares at you like your words were a cruel prank. “Cool. Oh my god, sorry. I, um, I like you that way too. I’m sorry that I didn’t make it clear.”

You’re dumbfounded. He likes you. You replay every memory with him in your mind, trying desperately to pick up on any sign of love. Despite knowing him deeply, you can’t find any. His feelings must have been locked deeply in his heart.

“Really?”

He nods, and you smile brighter than the stars in the sky. “Wow, and I thought I knew you,” you tease, “I didn’t pick up on it at all.”

“Yeah, I guess I’m just too dark and brooding for you to get any answers.” He deadpans. As you look at him, though, his mouth turns up into a slight smile.

“You’ll never be too anything for me, Mr. Erzhaler.”

He shakes his head with a small grin on his face. “I hope so.”

Hi, first off congrats on 100 ! I wanted to send smth in for a Quarry matchup. I have a preference for guys so if it could lean that way that'd be awesome 👀 I'm a 5'9" transmasc who's a big ole introvert save for my small circle of people I'm close to. I currently intern at a theater with focuses in sound and lighting. However in the future I'd like to work as a sound designer in really any extent. I love horror movies and haunt attractions, and to no one's surprise, Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. I hyperfixate on things a ton and tend to subject everyone around me to my rambles and infodumps. Unfortunately addicted to making playlists that are painfully specific, yet they're somehow all 2+ hours long. I'm also a sucker for animated movies and will sob everytime I watch a Pixar film. Some last minute interests include art, DnD, true crime, puzzles, writing, video games, and conspiracy theories. Thank you !
